Would my team benefit from picking up Sandoval?

Postby foeplay » Fri Apr 03, 2009 11:20 am

Someone dropped him in my 10-teamer and he's now a FA, but I'm not sure if I have any use for him. I feel like I need some more power which is I'm contemplating it. If so, who should I drop for him? Thanks and WHIR.

I like Iannetta better than Sandoval. I wouldn't carry two catchers and I don't think Sanodval will have much value outside of that position.

i think Sandoval can be a great option for a backup catcher. Sandoval is going to be playing 3B full time. hes not going to get as many games off as a catcher. catchers dont usually play a full season. how many games do you think Ianetta is going to play? 130? maybe 140? the catchers who started the most last season- Martin 155(saw time at 3B), Kendal 151, Suzuki 148, Mauer 146, Molina 145, McCann 145, Soto 141. when Ianetta isnt playing your getting nothing from the catcher spot. now imagine the stats you could get if you can plug Sandoval into the C spot when Ianetta is on the bench. i dont think its worth carrying a 2nd catcher when that 2nd catcher isnt a very good hitter ..but Sandoval has the ability to become a good hitter.
question is who to drop for Sandoval. personally i would say Sherrill. it wont be long before Ray is closing in Baltimore. even if Sherrill does start the season at closer he wont last long. the numbers he had in the 2nd half last were were terrible.

ive tried trading for Sandoval for the reasons ive mentioned, but the other owner told me Sandoval was not being traded at all.

You'd only be playing him at catcher if you did, barring an injury from your CI. Iannetta should be getting more at bat this year and should produce. People are high on Sandoval though. The question is whether he can take his numbers from last year and carry that production out over a full season. If he can, he'll be looking good. Plus, he has the advantage of not actually playing catcher. He should end up playing in more games than a typical catcher would. That doesn't mean that he'll necessarily produce more, but it doesn't hurt. Iannetta is the safer option than Sandoval. Sandoval makes a very interesting gamble. I would doubt he'd put up better power numbers than Iannetta though. So if that's what you're after, stick with Iannetta. It's either one or the other on your roster.

I wouldn't play him anywhere but C but I'd rather have him than Murphy. Pick him up and give it a month.

With 3 UT I think it's a bad idea to carry a 2nd catcher because you'll get a lot of value out of your bench players. Even if you don't like Murphy, there will be players more valuable than Sandoval on the WW.
