Commish Question? Veto or No?

Postby ScrappyDoo » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:59 pm

10 team league. $250 entry fee.

Alright, I'm going to put this as simple as possible. Two days after the draft I get this trade offer trying to get pushed through. Overall pick number in the paratheses.

M Holliday (#12) and CC Sabathia (#29) for M Ramirez (#24) and J Lester (#97).

I hate to veto but this a little much. Both parties say they want the trade to go through because one is a Red Sox fan and wants Manny and Lester bad. He said he offered Manny and Oswalt, but other owner wanted Lester. My problem, and some league members' problem, is that if he wanted Manny so bad why did he draft Holiday at 12 overall instead of Manny. And why did he wait so long to grab Lester who went in the 10th round?

They both say they want it to go through, the rest of the league obviously don't.

I came to you guys, what do you think?

well, i think if both parties agree, and the league is set up that the commish approves trades, rather than a league-vote, then you have to let it go through. i see why you have questions; i certainly would too. if these guys don't know each other, then i think you have to approve it. however, if you think these guys are in some sort of "alliance," then i'd deny it, but then again, you'd have to have proof.

look at mine for fun?? viewtopic.php?f=26&t=375911

I would want the Sabathia side, but do agree that Manny is a better bet than Holliday. It's not tilted enough to veto without evidence of collusion IMO.

The trade is not veto material. Manny should outproduce Holliday given good health for both.

Just a note for the future. We have been playing in 2 money leagues for the past ten years. The first 3 years we set it up for commish veto. He vetoed a trade and it caused a big scene. We made him reverse it. Since then both our leagues are veto by league vote. Have not had a problem since. The vast majority of our trades go through. Maybe 2 vetoes in the last 7 years.

You can take the heat off yourself and make everyone in the league responsible. Only works if you have an active league. Also we all have known each other for years.

good luck

Absent any evidence of collusion, this one has to go through.

this is a strange deal because essentially one side is getting the higher drafted player at the same position - and like you said why would they trade the same players at the same position when one guy took Holliday over Manny in the first place and then CC well ahead of Lester - something seems weird here -

if the guy was trying to fill needs and lost the deal that is one thing, but although I hate vetoing something is suspicious here - are they splitting the league winnings or what? In theory it is not vetoable at all , but why would the guy select Holliday over Manny and CC way over Lester????? if he loves Manny and Lester so much
