Chris Young and Jamie Moyer: spring stats mean nothing?

Postby chem » Thu Apr 02, 2009 6:45 pm

Chris Young (SD) and Jamie Moyer have both been rocked in their past two outings, including today's. Their spring ERAs are balloon-sized. I know Moyer is old and not recommended for most teams, but Young was projected to be pretty good this season. He says he feels fine.

Do you dare start them in week 1? When does one abandon ship on these guys? Imagine it's a really deep league and/or NL-only.

Relax. These are veterans who are in no danger of losing their rotation spot. They are getting stretched, and working on secondary stuff. Their Spring stats literally mean nothing.

Are either of these guys fighting for a spot in the rotation? Are either of them battling injuries? No? Ignore spring #'s with them then.

Sabathia's start almost cost me the season last year. Tread lightly.

Unless you were silly enough to trade him at low value how did it ultimately cost you anything?

Yeah, I'm in a weekly league with him and decided to go with Parra as my last P instead of C. Young...it looks like there might be something not quite right with him.

Per Rotoworld:
"Young clearly isn't right...The move from Arizona to Petco will likely help Young, but neither his usual velocity nor his command is there right now. It'd be no surprise to see him follow Baek to the DL."

I simply don't trust Rotoworld's analysis... it's not like they're watching him pitch. Still, the stats concern me. No idea what to do. I wish there was some good San Diego fan writing about all this and seeing it in person.

As for Moyer, well, no idea there either. Crafty vet practicing a pitch and not caring? Or old man out of shape and losing pitch control? Only a MLB scout/player/coach can tell the difference, and I can't find a quote from them. :)

Young doesn't have a "fast" fastball...he tops out at about 88, he was up to 86 his last start. His sliders register about 80 mph. He is effective with these pitches because he is freakishly tall, and is very deceptive. Don't worry about 86, that pretty good for Young at this point. I'm more worried about his run support.
