Trade Carlos Marmol?

Postby Hammers » Thu Apr 02, 2009 2:07 pm

I drafted Marmol with the intent that he would be the Cubs main closer and now Piniella has decided to go with Kevin Gregg instead. Someone in my league approached me today and asked me what I wanted for Marmol. My guess is that owner will most likely keep the bench room to sit on Marmol till Piniella changes his mind. It is not guaranteed, but I have the opportunity to pick up Gregg on waivers once they being in a week.

My question is: Should I sit on Marmol till Pinella changes his mind? What is Piniella's general strategy with his closers? If I should move Marmol, what should I ask for in return (i.e. - another player, draft picks for next year, etc...)?

sweet Lou doesn't just change his mind one week and change it back the next so i say Gregg will most likely be the closer for the year unless he BOMBS BIG TIME (don't for see that happening) and if he does i don't see Marmol stepping back into the closer role as this was his 2nd chance at the closer spot and he didn't get it again (was closing for part of the year last year) hes built for for the long inning relief and as the setup guy and i think Lou now realizes that and will keep him there... and hell they dealt with Dempsters big ERA and WHIP numbers so if you say Gregg's ERA and WHIPs are terrible the cubs will deal with it as long as hes still closing down games (which he showed he could do in Florida)... as for trading Marmol, depends on what your going to be offered, hes still going to offer your team some good stats IMO, he will give you a high K rate with a great ERA and WHIP to help out a struggling starter in your roation, and will chip in a W every now and then.... this manager approached you ask what hes offering and go from there...

help me out...

even without saves marmol is VERY valuable. and even if gregg stays the closer the whole year i could still see between 7-10 saves for marmol. no one is untouchable, so i would investigate a trade if someone is interested, but i wouldn't give him away.

I would hang onto Marmol OR package Marmol and Doumit or Marmol and Cain for a better catcher or another Ace. He could be the gravy that makes a player more palatable for another owner to buy the package...

It looks like you're only going to have 2 closers on your roster. I think it's best to decide whether you want to concentrate on saves or not. If not, keep Marmol for his stats. If so, trade Marmol for another position and wait to grab a mid-season closer as a FA.
