Trade a pitcher for D Lee? - WHIR

Postby oxhammer » Thu Apr 02, 2009 12:21 pm

I could use an upgrade at 1B. Not sure if I should be starting Jackson over Giambi as it is. A team that has D Lee on the bench could use some starting pitching. My question is whether I should make the trade. Would D Lee be enough of an upgrade over who I have to warrant losing a SP. If so, rank my SP that it would be worth it to trade for him. Also, if the trade went through, should I drop Jackson or Giambi? As far as pitchers to pick up, Parra, Carmona, Volstad, Rodríguez, and Buehrle are available. I could also stash Duchscherer or Hudson on my DL.

I would think it would be a good trade if you could get it for say Lester.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Maine doesn't get it done.
Peavy, Billingsly, Felix are definitely too much to give up.
Lester or Bedard could work, even though I like these guys a lot this year.

I would try Bedard.. as much as I'd like to roll the dice on him this year, an injury does seem inevitable.

I would trade King Felix for a better first baseman. I really like the trifecta of Peavy, Billingsley, and Lester (Bedard is fully healthy and should have a really good year.) I am not a fan of Felix though and I think you could get a nice first baseman for him, he is a big name player and should have a lot of value. D Lee is declining steadily and I would go for a younger guy. One of my favorite underrated first baseman is Adrian Gonzalez. He will put up big time power numbers (35+ homers,) while still hitting for a respectable average. He plays in a terrible hitters park and still rakes! I would try and get him at all costs, if it means packaging Felix and a hitter I would strongly consider it. Also, check out Youkilis and if Adam Dunn qualifies at first in your league (and you can stomach his batting average,) give him a look as well. Good luck!

I think Lee's best years are behind him, although i own Lee right now. I am not sure Lee is much of an upgrade over Co Jacks. Co Jacks is assured of playing time. They both seem to be 80R, 90RBI, 20 HR players to me. I would keep your starters, then when Lee starts struggling, lowball his owner.

Also another option...Mike Jacobs is available as a free agent. He put up similar numbers to Giambi last year but is obviously a lot younger.

Jacobs is on my team this year, I could see him hitting over 30 homers again, but the batting average is pretty rough (.247 last season.) I still say to go for a top level first baseman and trade Felix.

The only two SP I'd be willing to trade Lee for straight up are Maine and Lester. I think you can do better at your 1B/DH spot, which is why I'd try shopping Peavy, Billingsley, or Felix around for a top bat if you really feel compelled to.

I would start Conor Jackson over Giambi. Jackson did very well last year and he is still prime to improve his numbers. Giambi is well on his way out and is more of a mentor to the A's younger staff than a hitter for them.

As far as Lee is concerned, look at his BABIP. It dropped last year so you can expect it to go up. Also, what are the odds that he will do anywhere close to what he did last year? Don't buy into the hype.
