Lidge, B. Roberts, Uggla trade - WHIR

Postby aramis16 » Wed Apr 01, 2009 7:27 pm

Hey everyone, I have a trade offer I can't decide on:

I've been offered Brian Roberts and Marmol for my Lidge and Uggla.

11-team, 5x5 roto league, except we use OBP instead of AVG.

C-P. Sandoval/M. Wieters
1B-P. Fielder
2B-D. Uggla
3B-D. Wright
SS-F. Lopez
OF-J. Bay
OF-N. McLouth
OF-J. Damon/J. Upton
Util-C. Pena
Util-E. Dukes/J. Upton

bench-Wieters
bench-J. Upton

SP: Sabathia, D. Haren, R. Nolasco, R. Dempster, A. Harang
RP: B. Lidge, K. Gregg, J. Motte, B. Morrow, C. Ray

Right now my SB threats are Wright (~20), McLouth (~25), Damon (~20), F. Lopez (~20) and Dukes (~15). I doubt that is enough, so I would love to have Roberts' 40 SB at my 2B slot. I might not have enough power then, but maybe I could trade Damon for a power guy like Hawpe. It just seems easier to find a 25 HR guy than a 25 SB guy (that contribute decently in other categories). The other big thing for me is the big boost in OBP. Roberts has been around .375-.380, while Uggla has been in the .330s or lower until last year at .360. I've just never been a fan of Uggla - way too many strikeouts compared to walks. Plus he's really struggling in spring training. Roberts is having problems with his back though.

The other side of it is Lidge for Marmol. I don't value closers very much because you can always find good cheap ones (see my draft strategy - Gregg, Motte, Morrow will all end up as closers, and Ray probably will as well). Having Marmol would assure me the Cubs closer, and his ratios would be better than Lidge (especially WHIP). And one injury to Gregg or ineffectiveness boosts Marmol to a top-5 closer instantly. But Lidge will probably end up with 25-35 more saves than Marmol.

I offered Gregg and Uggla for Roberts but he didn't like that and countered with this.

So does the upgrade from Uggla to Roberts (just much more proven to me) make up for the dropoff from Lidge to Marmol?

Or should I just hold off? Would love to get Roberts and get rid of Uggla (fell to me late, felt like I should take him for his pop at 2B)

Thanks and WHIR.
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

I would do it, particulary with your opinion of Uggla. I'm not a huge Uggla fan either, and I do like Roberts. Lidge is less valuable than Marmol, but Marmol is a solid middle reliever even if he doesn't get the closing gig. I think it's OK. It depends on how much you like Uggla for this deal. Since you aren't a fan of Uggla, I think it is a good move for you.

if you think you need the SBs then make the deal.

Losing Lidge drops your SVs but Marmol still gives you the Ks and ratios. Plus Saves are pretty easy to find if you pay attention.

I would do it since marmol will get you other categories so the only one you're giving up really is saves. And with what you think about Uggla it seems to make sense.

This is a tough one. I actually like Uggla/Lidge better in a vacuum, but you look like you could use the speed more than the power. Still, I see Lidge to Marmol as a significant dropoff, at least til Marmol is a closer. I don't think I'd do this deal.

Help if you can?
