What is Smoltz's role upon return?

He's definitely starting when he returns.

Should start in the rotation but who knows how he will hold up.

Right, if he is healthy, and he will be if he pitches for the Sox, he'll take over for Penny or Wake or Buchholz if he is in the rotation at the time. The Sox have the best bullpen in the majors, so rushing Smoltz into the RP role probably isn't worth it. If it takes 4 months to get Smoltz ready to start, they'll wait 4 months. Should be much earlier than that though.

I did do a search. It's not exactly easy when the top 50 search results are from posts with people having Smoltz in their roster/sig. Thanks for your helpful reply though
