Saito good source for Holds?

Postby TheOmen » Wed Apr 01, 2009 1:50 am

I'm in a 5x5 roto league with holds in the place of WHIP. Does anyone thing Saito will be in line for a lot of holds on the Sox?

I'm thinking of dumping him for either Marte (NYY) or Rafael Perez (Indians) who both had over 20 holds last season.

Or should I just stand pat since Saito offers such great ratios?

I would keep Saito over Marte, but between Saito and Perez is a matter of preference. I think that Saito's rate stats will be slightly better, but his role is less predictable than Perez's, so Perez would probably get you more holds.

Holds are quite simply unpredictable. IMO I would look for the guy who will get the vast majority of the 8th inning work, but puts up the best peripherals and of that group Perez is clearly the standout (his stuff is outstanding). As far as the other two Marte is clearly the setup guy on the Yanks while the Red Sox pen has quite a few arms with Okajima probably garnering most of the 8th inning work, although multiple holds can be acquired during a game ala Saito 7th inning?. But remember the Sox also have Declareman and Masterson who both have fantastic arms.

I like Marte for holds. I think if anything happens to Mariano, the Yankees will look to Joba to close rather than Marte. Marte should be the steadiest source of holds with not much of a chance of closing sometime later making you scramble for another source of Hs.

I prefer Saito but this is close. A resource in the Leftovers section that is helpful if you haven't seen it: viewtopic.php?t=365686

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
