Drafted @ 6 Spot, Need Help Fixing This Mess

Postby sharkbait006 » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:34 pm

Just drafted yesterday and I think I had a brain fart or something in those 3 hours. I'm not sure if this team is competitive or not. Can someone break it down for me... where are my strengths and weaknesses? Who I should I put on the block to improve my team.

I drafted too many 1B and not enough Relief pitching which went really early in the draft.

My team:

NL-ONLY H2H 5x5 - Keeper league.

C- Pablo Sandoval
1B- Ryan Howard
2B- Kelly Johnson
3B- Ryan Zimmerman
SS- Miguel Tejada -> Wanted Stephen Drew but he was gone 3 picks before. UGH
OF- Manny Ramirez
OF- Nate McClouth
OF- Eric Byrnes -> I am kicking myself for not selecting E Dukes with this pick. Didnt realize Byrnes is not an every day player.
UTIL- James Loney

Start 2 SP, 2 RP, 3 P
SP- Jake Peavy, Brett Myers, Jair Jurrjens, Chris Carpenter, Paul Maholm, Joe Blanton, Scott Olsen, Tim Hudson (DL)
RP- Jason Motte, Manual Corpas, Taylor Buchholz

Bench: Todd Helton, Colby Rasmus, Ryan Spilborghs

I'm thinking about dropping Scott Olsen to pick up higher ceiling players.

PLAYERS AVAILABLE:
Skip Schumaker - OF/2nd Base -> He's moved to 2nd and could be good value and give me flexibility and insurance against Kelly Johnson who I'm not sold on.

Luis Castillo - 2nd Base -> Insurance against Kelly Johnson. Great bats around him.

Andy LaRoche - 3rd Base -> Talented player. Cant quite put it together.

Andrew McCutchen - OF -> They demoted him to minor leagues to avoid starting his abritration clock but he's way talented and will probably play this season. Is he worth a spot on my roster tho?

John Baker - C -> He put up nice stats last year in his at bats. Insurance against my sleeper pick, Sandoval?

James McDonald - SP/RP -> He has pretty good stuff and plays in Dodger stadium and might have locked up the 5th spot. Is he better than Scott Olsen?

Ross Ohlendorf - SP/RP -> He's looked very good this spring with a .96 era and looks to have the 4th spot locked up.

I don't have any experience in NL only leagues, but I think your offense is pretty solid overall. You already pointed out the obvious glaring weakness with Byrnes, and I would look to drop him for a starter. You mentioned Schumaker as being available... he might be worth it over Byrnes, especially once he gets that added bonus of 2B eligibilty. I really like your bench as well due to my Rockies fan status ;-), and targeted both Helton and Spilly as late picks in a 12 team draft a few days ago (and missed them both by a few picks, of course!). Rasmus could make an impact if given the chance this year.

Pitching seems to be a bit of a weakness. Peavy is an ace ofcourse, and I like Jurrjens. Carpenter, if he remains healthy, could be a big steal. Motte is apparently the closer in St Louis, but with La Russa who knows when that will switch. As a Rockies fan I don't even know who will be in the 9th for the Rox this year, but Corpas is at least a 50-50 shot. Buchholz is out until May as well.

Who are some of the relief pitchers available? Any sleeper closer types? I might look to drop both Blanton and Olsen for a RP and another SP if you can find a good sleeper there.

Leo Nunez is available . He might get some saves while Lindstrom is out. It might be Logan Kensing who is still available.

Is this worth exploring? I'm not sure Lindstrom will be back? Who would I drop?
