so yeah hey the name is james i'm pretty OG on this place and i'm back after taking a year off of all fantasy sports in 2008 to recharge my batteries. it happened last night, i officially geeked out at home and despite a comcastically de-nutted dialup connection that goes 14.4k/ 1.5k/sec, i spent the better portion of 3 hours soaking in stats and reports and scouting leagues and making moves to upgrade all four of my teams. it's time for fantasy baseball, so here i am back in the fray and i dont know what WHIR means but i think means osmething liek will help if you respond, so i wanna point out that i'm generally pretty good at this stuff and i'll give you some heartfelt 411 from over here if you jump in my threads from here on out. oh yeah and i babble so forgive me. anyways let's get it on:
alrighty, in my main league (aka the one that i play with people i know as opposed to random yahoo publeagues) i've got an odd one with an extra OF slot and a MI/CI position and extra roster spots, so it's a somewhat deep league. i managed to show up to my draft 19 rounds late and found out the hard way that my pre-draft rankings were drastically slanted towards starting pitching, which might be a blessing in disguise if i can manage to pull off even a barely 50%+ offense in the league, i should absolutely smoke these people. check out my roster:
C - ryan doumit 1B - jorge cantu / mike jacobs / jason giambi 2B - kaz matsui / (looking at asdrubal cabrera on the FA market) SS - elvis andrus / erick aybar 3B - edwin encarnacion / josh fields /adrian beltre MI/CI slots - use your imagination with the leftovers from that lot OF - grady sizemore, vladimir guerrero lastings milledge OF - nelson cruz, brad hawpe OF - carlos gomez, michael bourn OF - yeah i've got one more OF slot out of the lot listed above util - and another one of these bums gets to be my util guy
now after you've seen that trash on offense check out the rectal-expanding excellence that i've got coming for this league in the 09...
SP - johan santana, tim lincecum, roy halladay, cole hamels, daisuke matsuzaka, carlos zambrano RP - bobby jenks, kevin gregg, frank francisco, troy percival, carlos marmol
-- so with that in mind, obviously i've gotta procure a solid offense in order to let my starters do their thing and propel me to the ERA/WHIP/Wins greatness with upper 1/2 Ks and hopefully those 4 closers i've got can hold out and maybe i can nick a temp closer or a switch in the year and put it away.
so early on here i'm tinkering around with the trade processes, feeling things out, and my friend chris has already come up to me and proposed a roy halladay for chipper jones trade straightup, at which i balked and laughed and responded "maybe five years ago, but chipper has a fighting chance of losing an appendage and i'm not quite desperate to unload any of my pitching that guarantees a foot in ye olde arse yet"
looking at his team, he's got the following players that would interest me if i were to part with one of my aces, tho out of my lot i'd lean towards daisuke seeing as zambrano is not only coming into 09 at a relatively low value after two 3.90ish era years in a row, but he's also my favorite pitcher, so i kind of live by the sword die by the sword with him like i do with vlad for the most part (le expo represent!!)
anyways, trade-o-matic here has the following peeps that would interest me in a major trade:
hanley ramirez, chris davis, brandon phillips, and maybe a brian mccann and/or alexei ramirez (i'm not big up on doumit, tho i come across nothing but positives that he's a very solid fantasy catcher so i'm not necessarily desperate for a mccann or soto)
obviously, being expos massive here i'm a big brandon phillips guy, as i think he's done 20/20 for a couple'a years in a row and is pretty much money for ~.270ish/20/75/20, with the hopes he could plateau to 25/90/25 or something, and that's a hell of a lot better than my little kaz matsui thing, or the pretense of asdrubal cabrera.
also chris davis tantalizes me, as the kid seems to hit the crap out of the ball whether its regular season or this spring, and if you put his numbers from last year out over a full season that's the kind of goodness i want, definitely an upgrade at 1B/3B over cantu
so seeing as he nibbled on halladay, what would you go for if you were going to offer halladay to him!? is chris davis still too much of an uncertain to go straightup, seeing as i'd much rather have his upside than chippers, and is brandon phillips right around there?! would you try a package deal where maybe i toss in a lower end closer with halladay and package up two of his players or maybe nab a lower-tier SP or go up the closer tree?!@
what thinkest thou, and forgive my verbosity here as i'm far from desperate, i'm just wondering what y'all think someone in my position of unrequited SP dominance can do to tantalize a guy whose pitching staff is as follows:
SP - dan haren, josh beckett, joba, derek lowe, smoltz, para, hong-chih kuo, jordan zimmermann, smoltz, manny parra RP - broxton, qualls, m-gonzalez, motte, scherzer, chris ray
haren is nice, but beyond that nobody there puts the fear of god in my eyes. his offense is young and potential-laden and definitely going to be in the upper 1/3, so if he gets pitching he could basically ensure he's in the upper 1/3 of the league, so i gotta be smart about this... what thinkest thou oh veritable sages of fantasy baseball cafe?!@
pardon me whilst i go around answering some of y'all questions for excretions and giggles
just because you have excess in SP, doesn't mean you should short-change yourself in a deal. Chris Davis may be the man, but straight up for Holladay ain't enough. Brandon Phillips, on the other hand, is very good for you, though I doubt he'll bite. With your team, I would look to get creative. BOTH Davis and Phillips look delicious for you. I would look to offer Holladay and a Dice-K/Kaz mix. If you could unload some of those bummish MI/CI guys you have and keep Dice-K, all the better.

oh yeah, me and this guy go back and forth and always toy with each other, starting off with trades the other would have to be some sort of well-beyond-inebriated to pull the trigger on.
i want to get this straight: you're thinking i offer halladay as the main bait along with another starter or a spattering of the bums and try to go for davis AND phillips in some sort of a package?!@
i'm going to counter him halladay and kaz matsui/jorge cantu for brandon phillips and chris davis and chris ray just to give him an idea of where i'm going and see what kind of still-not-there rebuttal he's got, cuz really, i'd have to be undergoing brain trauma rehabilitation to even consider his original offer of chipper for halladay
edit: or better yet, i'll offer up dice-K / cantu / matsui for phillps davis and maybe ray to see what he comes back with, because really dice-K is the expendable one in my book. i really like his stuff, but his whip is generally high even when the ERA is low so he's been voted most likely of my bonafide aces to have his ERA swell into the 3s, because i assume you'd rank halladay over dice-K, right?!@
I think adding ray to the equation is a bit too much. Davis AND Phillips is a steal, IMO. You guys could go back and forth forever if you try and add Ray. You gotta see it as: Holladay < or = Phillips Kaz or Dice-K or Cantu < Davis
It's a roll of the dice with this one. Adding Ray is great for you, but asking for a decline, if you ask me.
well i offered halladay cantu and kaz-mat for davis phillips and ray.
he's already got four closers before you get to ray, and looking at his team i know if he manages to get a top-tier ace he's going to rain hellfire down upon the league because i really do like his offense, i mean check this one out:
C - brian mccann 1B - joey votto 2B - b-phillips SS - hanley ramirez 3B - chipper jones CI - ryan zimmerman MI - alexei ramirez OF - conor jackson OF - carl crawford OF - justin upton OF - rich ankiel util - chris davis bench - adam jones bench - cameron maybin
so i mean, if he trades phillips he can slide ramirez right over tehre and basically kazmat is actually somewhat decent for what he is, which he could use in that MI role as long as the guy is healthy, and i'm not a giant cantu guy but you could do worse and one could argue that's on par and right around what a healthy/decent ryan zimmerman would be, so arguably he's maybe a half notch below b-phillips at 2B (unless they take alexei's 2B eligibility away, which i dont think they do in yahoo) and i'm arguably upgrading his CI position, and seriously he's sittign on qualls broxton m-gonzalez and motte, so he's got four closers just liek i do.
basically, we'll see what he does and if his reply sucks i'll drop ray and see if he goes for it.
while i can get fat on my offense, i have to keep in mind that i'mma be battling this guy for the crown if i can get my offense off of the ground, so i've gotta be careful about giving him what he wants this quickly =D
hey, whilst you're here since you clearly know your excrement with fantasy baseball and i'm coming off of a year off of all fantasysports in 08, what do you think about asdrubal cabrera and erick aybar?!@
basically coming out of the draft i took elvis andrus as kind of a "hmm who do i get" thing without looking at stats, and he isn't exactly setting the world on fire during the spring and yahoo lists him as NA and i havent seen if he's starting off at AA/AAA and figure that going for a hot bat in spring on a pretty young kid on a good team might not be a bad way to go, that is playing balls out "smoke em if you've got em" roto until i can land a trade or a mainstay out of the lot.
shapiro seems to have good luck with the youngsters in cleveland and am i completely off base for seeing a-cabrera outslugging most of the AL shortstops/2B in spring training and thinking hmm maybe this guy can go up to something like .285+/15/65+ with 5-10 steals and be solid for me, whilst aybar is having the best spring for a shortstop in the AL and there's a reason the angels let cabrera go to the chisox for garland a couple'a years ago...
or are there any other young/sleeperish middle infielders you can recommend?!@ i'm pretty sure i can get someone decent 20ish/70+ at 1B and i think fields will be solid at 3B if nothing else so it's not emergency, but if i can get productivity from the dreaded MI/2B/SS positions i should be able to carry on, especially cuz i think nelson cruz is gonna be nice, tho not quite the chris davis that i know and covet =D
nice call on aaron hill, i just dropped elvis andrus for him and put erick aybar at shortstop and a-hill at MI. he looks like he was injured last year, but if he's like he was in 07 dude you hooked me up.
TRADE-O-MATIC responded and man i think he's bagging on me for asking too much, cuz i literally laughed out loud when i saw this one:
he offers me brandon phillips, joba chamberlain, and chris ray for lincecum and holliday.
no no way is this guy getting both lincecum and holliday, although lincecum has technically done it supermegauber ace style for only one year, quoteth sam elliott in teh big lebowski "i like [his] style, dude"
so what advice can you offer for a counter?!2 there's no way he's getting two of my beloved aces to dump me with frickin joba, that's for dang-sure (man i love being linguistically smooth on this board, as i came back to a 2 year old warning PM cuz i let an f-bomb roll =)
so let's see, he's trying to be hard to get with chris davis, so how about we wane him off of holliday and do lincecum... hmm. i'm plotting for 5-10 mins, i'll see if he's on AIM to really pick his brain while i give you a few minutes to team up with me here =D
hit me back on this cuz i value your feedback here
