Hopefully nobody else signs him and he's forever stuck at 499. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I think that this makes Thames ownable. 25 HR in 316 AB last year makes him decent power if he has a FT DH gig.

I love Thames in deep leagues as a platoon guy with 1B/OF eligbility, but I doubt he'll be a full-time player. Josh Anderson being a lefty makes some platooning natural.

I bet he'll draw a ton of interest, excepet not as a starter. He'd be pretty valuable to an NL team as a pinch hitter.

Something tells me Sheffield isn't going to accept a job as a pinch hitter.

I can't imagine it will as long as he's willing to play for league minimum, which shouldn't be a problem since he's got $14M on the way regardless.

Right now, Sheffield is the undeniable best Free Agent on the market. Period. He's free with the potential to be worth an all-star. I see no reason the Jays and Rangers don't want him. Stupid really.

I think some are overrating Sheff's current abilities. A team doesn't just flat-out release a player making $14M if he can be a solid player. Look at how long the M's held onto Sexson last year before cutting him. But just like Sexson somebody might pick him up to give him a try as a RH platoon bat or RH bench bat.

I actually think there is a good chance that he plays as much baseball as Barry Bonds this season.

2:49pm: Zolecki learned from Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. that the team did contract Sheffield's agent. The Reds haven't discussed it, says Walt Jocketty.

5:12pm: Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer learned from a team source that the chances of the Phillies signing Sheffield are "very slim." Martino did learn from Sheffield's agent Rufus Williams that a part-time role is not off the table for his client.

It looks like he has an offer. Part-time with the Phillies.
His ego might not let him take it though. :-?
