Tigers release Sheffield

Tigers released OF/DH Gary Sheffield.
The club will eat all of the $14 million they owe him for 2009. Sheffield, 40, hit .225 with 19 home runs and 57 RBI in 114 games last season. Not too surprised. Bat speed has been slowing down drastically. Though, he may have one more season of decent value left. Will be interesting to see where he winds up.

I still think he has something left in the tank for an AL team that appreciates good drama. He will cost nothing and is supposedly healthy. Even though his average stinks this spring, his OBP is good, he has more walks than K's, and he has a few jacks.

If the Jays deem signing Barry Bonds to be "selling their souls," I highly doubt a declining Gary Sheffield would wind up in Toronto in a "rebuilding" year.

I think he'd suit the Orioles nicely, but that's probably just me. It's a young team and they could afford a year of veteran guidance with a solid HR bat to bat DH for them, but they're probably going to avoid someone with Sheff's attitude around the Young'ens. The Jays are probably the best fit though. I mean, they were using a catcher as their DH for part of last year.
