Draft was last night. My computer froze up in the second and third rounds and I got autopicked 2 catchers (ugh), throwing off all of my mojo. I was able to recover, but am stuck with 2 good catchers, one who'd I'd like to keep (Iannetta) and one who'd I like to trade (Napoli). Alas, I haven't gotten any bites on Napoli...such is the life of a catcher. Their trade value is much lower than where you pick them in a draft.
Anyway, here is my team and the only offer I've gotten is Pettitte for Napoli. Pettitte is solid and is having a great spring (he was lights out today, 6.2 IP, 7K, 1R). Do I get rid of Napoli now and bolster my SP (since I have 2 young guys) or wait it out? Scares me that Napoli had shoulder surgery too.
C- Iannetta (Autopick) 1B - Votto 2B - Utley SS - Reyes 3B - A. Ramierez OF - Hamilton OF - Crisp OF- Spilboroghs Util - Ad Laroche BN - Napoli (Autopick) BN - Schumaker BN - Dickerson
SP - Beckett SP - U. Jimenez SP - Josh Johnson SP - J. Zimmerman RP - Dotel RP - J. Cruz P - A. Sanchez BN - M. Owings BN. T. Hanson
While I get the Cs drop value like a car driven out of the lot, I wouldn't think it would be too severe in a 20-teamer. I would definitely look around for a better trade than that but it's not bad if it's the best you can do.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
I agree in a 20 team league I would think you could do better, but if you can't, it's really not a bad deal for you. Pettite is a solid SP that will provide a good source for you.
Ideally you could get someone better for Napoli and I'd aggressively start sending out offers in that regard, but if you can't find a better deal then Pettitte isn't bad.
That's good in theory, but like a previous poster said, Catchers are like new cars. Once you drive them off the lot, their value plummets.
Probably only 3 or 4 teams "need" a catcher (some guys are happy with the Pudges, Kurt Suzukis of the world) and a couple of the ones that do are pretty light in pitching as well so are content to hold what they have. Jurrgens for Napoli was already rejected as was Scott Baker and even John Hanrahan.
I am thinking Napoli will not get you much in return.... Pettite is not bad, especially in a 20 teamer where I am guessing pitching is thin with nothing on the wire.... if you cannot get better I would have to take it in your position
5x5 H2H, NK 10 teams C- JP 1B- Voto 2B- Zobri 3B- ARam SS- Rolins OF- J. Uptn, Choo, A. Gordn UTIL- Fielder BN- C. Crawfrd SP- Hamls, Bumgarner, Galardo, I. Kenedy, Fister, Kurda, Minr, Dempstr, Burnet, Ogando RP- Cishek, Veras, Parnel
I think I would take Pettite slightly ahead of Sonnastine... Perkins and Blakburn are on the WW in my 12 teamer... Petiie is at least solid on a good offensive team jury's still out on Sonny
What do theguys in need of a C have in terms of pitching? If I were you I'd try to pull a 2 for 1 swapping out Napoli and any pitcher not named Beckett for a higher tier pitcher than Pettitte... Yeah, Petitte is fine, but I'd want to try and get more value out of your 3rd round pick. A lot of times if you can give them a reasonable replacement for your target, people will be more likely to bite (I know pretty obvious), but it works.
Personally I'd be very very hesitant to go Petitte for Napoli straight up. Actually, I'd be more than hesitant, I wouldn't do it.
