I draft 1 safe closer somewhere around round 6 - 10 sacrificing performance for safety
Low injury risk/history Good K/BB - low whips - (fastball/changeup/slider pitchers if I can help it)
Then I start grabbing backups and possibles near the end and usually finish in the top 5 in saves.
Works for me.

Last year I was in 12 CBS leagues plus my local keeper league.
Results with this strat:
1 Double Diamond - 2nd (damn) 3 Diamonds - won 2, 4th in the 3rd 4 Platinums - won 2 also, 3rd and 5th 4 Golds - won 1, 2nd, 7th, 9th (got crazy with the cheap leagues trying out stuff)
Oh and I end up 5th in 14 team keeper, but I went for a lot of young guys, building, didnt expect to win.
So of the 12 CBS leagues with the little saves strat
5 wins (and almost hit the big boy) outta 12 (41%) but with golds being experimental, I feel good that I can hit well over 50% which equates to positive winnings.

If you do, good for you and your strategy works.
If you do not, then I would remove the word "never" from your thinking.
Do you honestly think that starting the year in an 11 point hole is a successful strategy in roto? I'll second it: I never punt cats in roto.
Yes. Over the last 3 years, I have won almost 50% of the NFBC satellite leagues I have entered, oftentimes pretty much bagging saves. I will draft some late flyers of guys who could get saves, and I will work the waiver wire during the year and try to get some saves.
That's not punting saves. That's ignoring them on draft day and working the wire. I find this method totally acceptable...
By the way, it is a 14 point hole because of 15 teams.
I never said I was talking about your league. I was referring to a typical 12 teamer. Sorry for the confusion, I guess...

A couple years ago I played in a 12 team yahoo league where I punted HR/RBI completely and just went SP and AVG/SB. It is a terrible strategy and I still won the league. Just saying I've won my league using this or that strat does not make it a good one.
