Little to No Saves 5x5 Strat

Postby chargerrich » Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:58 am

Anyone else use this strategy?

I find closers so unpredictable and see maybe 10 guys that are expected to keep their jobs all year. This level of uncertainty really makes for a volatile team so I favor premium 5 toolers, look toward speed, grab a few aces with SOand WHIP ability and grab undervalued potential.

That is not to say if a closer drops hard I wont take him (got Tex RP Francisco in the 19th last draft) and I try to get one guy just to keep me out of the cellar, but by and large I concentrate on the other 9 categories and dont really care about saves.

What do you guys think? Anyone used this strategy? Would love to hear opinions.

head to head or roto?

I never punt cats in roto, but in head to head, sure.

I used it last night in a 15 team NFBC satellite league. It worked perfectly, as my hitting projections are through the roof and my 9 SP projections all met my targets for the other categories.

I think it works best in the larger leagues.

I can always look to get a closer or two, if necessary.

Serious question - do you win your leagues?

If you do, good for you and your strategy works.

If you do not, then I would remove the word "never" from your thinking.

Do you honestly think that starting the year in an 11 point hole is a successful strategy in roto? I'll second it: I never punt cats in roto.

There is no good reason to punt saves in any league unless it has really goofy settings. At the very least grab some insecure job types late in the draft, at that point you aren't grabbing great value out of your picks, you are just drafting for upside and a closer who might last the entire year has a lot of upside.

The deeper the league, the easier it is to punt saves during the draft. In a very deep league, getting a vulture save guy or picking a WW guy who falls into the job can net you 3 or 4 points since the bottom of the saves cat is going to be extremely close. In shallow leagues getting 1 or even 0 closers pretty much guarantees you aren't climbing out of the hole.

I was in 4 leagues last season... 2 of which were cafe leagues, one of which was a roto league. I won the roto league, by a fairly large margin. Ask a few guys on this board. B-)

The beauty (and really injustice) of a head-to-head league is that you can completely write off a category for the first half of the season, then depending on your resources/trades/pickups dominate the same category later in the season.

I completely wrote off holds in a 6x6 h2h mixed league because of its volatility, and I won both the regular season and playoffs.

Worked for me. Your mileage might vary, but it's just really DUMB to write off ANY cat in roto ball, you just never know what the season will hold, and every day counts toward your final standings.

Yes. Over the last 3 years, I have won almost 50% of the NFBC satellite leagues I have entered, oftentimes pretty much bagging saves. I will draft some late flyers of guys who could get saves, and I will work the waiver wire during the year and try to get some saves. By the way, it is a 14 point hole because of 15 teams.

I repeatedly see a couple guys who bag SP's and go all reliever. That is bagging TWO categories.
