DRAFT HELP... strategy

Postby calicoolguy » Sat Mar 28, 2009 10:47 pm

It is a very competitive league that is 9x9 head to head. All have played fantasy sports before but usually its not a very strategic league when it comes to drafting.
posted this in the beginner forum but no help and my draft is tomorrow... sorry for the repost.

Here are the pitching categories.

Pitching (9): WHIP, ERA, K, K/9, W, SV, HD, QS, K/BB

4 SP 3 RP and 3 P

Now if i were to draft say 2 top tier Closers 2 2nd tier closers and 2 good setup men for the Holds for the RP and the 3 P and just pick up 4 SP towards the end of the draft with these categories do you think would do well winning the majority?

For my hitters i would draft bombers. so would take huge hit on avg but should have some very good power?

thoughts.....

I think leagues with that many categories just aren't very fun at all. There's a reason why the founding fathers of fantasy sports (baseball) had an initial 4x4 cat rotisserie format. The fewer the categories, the more exciting the games are, the less chance you have of picking up cheap wins in "cheap" categories. In the end alot of those peripheral categories usually correlate with the mainstream cats, so why play them in the first place?

Anyway to answer your question, if your offense also consists of 9 cats, then I say you draft the same way you would in a standard league. Draft hitters early and fill in SP later on with a stud starter nabbed to anchor your staff.

Ditto with Sammy D. You need a well rounded team: start with power hitters then with an Ace to anchor your staff. I've done what you're talking about in selecting more RP's instead of SP's to fill in the P spots. We've never used Holds in our league, but it makes the good setup men more valuable. Don't ignore your hitters and offense. It's hard to win the league on just pitching.
Draft the best players available to keep yourself competitive.
Good luck! ;-D
