Rate my draft - WHIR

Postby lane_anasazi2 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 10:40 pm

Just had a draft - 12 team, 5x5, H2H. I've got two drafts tomorrow so I'd really like some input on how this went. I'm interested in commentary on the team overall, but most interested in analysis of the actual draft, like if I took someone too early, or if so and so in the Nth round was good value. Here it is:

Position - Player (Round taken)

C - Kelly Shoppach (19th)
1B - Mark Teixeira (2nd)
2B - Brian Roberts (4th)
SS - Rafael Furcal (6th)
3B - Adrián Béltre (16th)
OF - Ryan Braun (1st)
OF - Jason Bay (3rd)
OF - Andre Ethier (11th)
UTL -Adrián González (5th)
BN - Cameron Maybin (18th)

SP - Felix Hernandez (7th)
SP - Scott Kazmir (8th)
SP - Javier Vazquez (9th)
SP - Zack Greinkie (12th)
SP - Max Scherzer - (13th)
SP - John Smoltz (20th)
RP - Jonathan Broxton (10th)
RP - Mike González (14th)
RP - Heath Bell (15th)
RP - Frank Francisco (17th)
RP - Joey Devine (21st)

Main improvement I can think of is that you should look to improve your catcher. Watch out for some up-and-coming catcher hitting stars such as Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Jeff Clement. Both Very good hitters.

The main concern with your team is health. You have a very risky but very upside type of team. If your lineup and staff stay healthy then you will have a VERY good team but you have to watch all of them very carefully.

Also watch out for the age/production decline in players such as Adrian Gonzalez, Adrian Beltre, Jason Bay, and John Smoltz

Very good draft IF they all stay healthy.

I would drop Devine for Kurt Suzuki that will solidify your Catching.

I really like this team, very similar to how I would draft one.

Teixeira is a no doubter 1st rounder in my mind, so anytime you can get him in the 2nd is a score. The Braun/Bay/Either OF combo is very good, and you won't be running over anyone but you're competitive enough IMO in steals with Roberts and Furcal. One thing to be weary about though is that Furcal is supposedly going to get a game off a week. It's not a huge deal but it could get pretty annoying in a H2H league, so just as a thought you might consider stashing a SS on the bench as the season goes on.

I'm high on Adrian Gonzalez this year despite the haters, so getting him around the 5th is good value in my eyes.

I like the pitching staff... lots of Ks, lots of saves. Your WHIP could be high, but in H2H that's one of those categories that can turn into a crapshoot at times.

Overall, no glaring great value picks, but you were left with a really solid, well balanced team.
