I'm in a keeper league and I just inherited a dead team. 12 team league, 260 cap, 5x5 scoring.
There are currently 5 teams going into the draft (in an hour) that don't have a starting 2B. They all have around the same amount of cash to spend as me. Currently every team in the league is in need of another 1B or DH; some with money some without. Other 2B's available are Brian Roberts, Ryan Theriot, Dan Uggla. 1B's available are Lance Berkman, Ryan Howard, Justin Morneau, Derrek Lee, James Loney, Carlos Pena, Garrett Atkins.
I have Utley and Cabrera on my lineup right now but they're going to cost me 42 dollars and 43 dollars respectively to keep. I am about to drop both of them before the draft but I can't decide whether or not I should hang on to Utley? 42 dollars is a ton for a 2B but the only other available guys aren't nearly as good as Utley and I'm afraid I won't be able to get him back. Am I stupid to think that if he hits the open market again he'll really go for 42 dollars +?
I might actually hang onto them both. They are clearly top options at their positions and even though they're both pretty high you're getting studs. What happened to the other $37 of your budget?
this is tough because to be honest i like Roberts alot, he gives you a great run total, really nice average and gives you 40 sb too... IMO i don't think utley is worth bout 20% of what you have left to spend, that total could get you 2-3 quality players that will more then out produce utley by himself... thats the way i always look at these situations, would you rather spend a quarter of your money on 1 player to give you maybe 100/25/100/.290 or would you rather 2-3 guys that could give you 80/15-20/90/.280? i would take 2-3 players over just one... just me tho, its great to have an utley or miggy (who i like more then utley anyways) on any team, but at the cost of a quarter of your cap thats a KILLER... i say pass on both and wait to see what the draft holds for you...

id love to do this 2, but you have to look at this... if you kept both you would spend $122 on 5 players, one of which is starting the year on the DL (Lackey)... so this leaves you $138 left to work with... if its a normal c,1b,2b,3b,ss,of,of,of,util,sp,sp,sp,rp,rp,p,p,p that then leaves you with only being able to spend an average of $11.5 per player to fill the rest of the roster? that doens't seem worth it to me...
Made a trade right before the draft; I traded Francisco Cordero (whom I was dropping) for Mark Teixeira. And then I got A-Rod as well.
So I got Tex for 39 and A-Rod for 43. Saved myself 3 bucks.
My roster needs some work (specifically closers and OF's) but it's as follows:
C - Yadier Molina P - Cole Hamels C - Gerald Laird P - Dan Haren 1B - Mark Teixeira P - John Lackey 2B - Jose Lopez P - Brandon Morrow 3B - Alex Rodriguez P - Ubaldo Jimenez SS - Christian Guzman P - Aaron Cook CI - Chipper Jones P - Fausto Carmona MI - Ryan Theriot P - Gavin Floyd DH - Carlos Guillen P - Andy Sonnanstine OF - Jason Bay OF - Ichiro Suzuki OF - Carlos Gomez OF - Justin Upton OF - Daniel Murphy
