My draft is today and I have the 8th pick. It's a 6x6 league (losses and OBP added). My keepers are Pujols , Hamilton and Braun. These guys will probably be available when i draft. Who would you take? Please rank them.
CC. Sabathia Brandon Webb Soriano Fielder Crawford Quentin Phillips
In a Roto league I'd be leaning toward C.C. but Fielder would be tempting. Fielder for me for sure in a H2H league.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
Fielder is the one that stands out to me from the bunch. If it was OBP INSTEAD of BA, it'd be a different story, but with both involved he stands out to me as the best of the bunch. I'd love Brandon Phillips if it was one or the other. The thing with him is that he can give you nice stats in 4 categories, but he hurts a team on BA (and in this case, OBP as well). In a league with both stats counted, I'd consider his value to be a round or two lower. I see that you have Pujols, but if your league has a Util slot or extra CI slot, I'd be going for Fielder out of the choices you've listed.
As for the pitchers you've mentioned, having played in a H2H league that counts losses as well, I've been hurt by drafting elite pitchers/closers bigtime. In a roto league counting losses, the elite starters may keep their value (while closers drop way down in either format), but in a H2H league you'd probably be better off with reliable hitters than reliable pitchers. You never really know when these losses will come. A bad week from a pitcher can potentially hurt you in 3 categories instead of just 2 now - Losses, ERA & WHIP. They also would not be contributing wins in that case. Closers more than anything broke my heart the first time I did a league that counts losses. You might argue that because of this, you'd want to draft the elite pitchers for less of a chance of losses... but I lost my league championship that year with an amazing staff.
Point being, I truly believe you should focus on hitting when losses are counted, especially with OBP added as well. Don't buy too much into closers/relievers, regardless of how elite, because they are the ones who can potentially bring you multiple losses in a week, unlike SPs who may bring you only 1 or 2 (the guy who beat me had no bench pitchers & no closers/relievers).
Now that you know the story of my life, once again, my recommendation is Prince Fielder
Thank you for that insight. It was very helpful......
