I agree, Maine at a buck is definitely a steal. Obviously he has his warts, but any pitcher you get for $1 will, but none will have his upside.
After all, this guy is just 27 and one year removed from looking like an ace. Given where guys like Bedard, Harang, and Carpenter are going, I love snagging Maine in the last few rounds (where I've been able to grab him).
Been a bit concerned with his wildness in Spring Training after coming off shoulder injury... he's got an 18.00 ERA and his WHIP is 1.83. He's walked 10 batters in 18 innings with 3 wild pitches and he hit a batter.
Good news is today he threw 95 pitches, so he went pretty deep into the game... don't mean to read too much into Spring Training stats, but when you see a guy struggle with control it's sorta worrisome.

I'm not a Mets fan, and I don't have any information that would lead me to believe you guys are wrong about him being a headcase / primed for a blow-up, but the thread-starter's question was about whether he was worth a roster spot as a $1 buy, which I think is pretty tough to argue against, regardless of all his potential shortcomings. Maybe he sucks, but he was dirt-cheap.
On the other hand, he has upside unlike any other $1 pitchers I've seen in my auctions.
