A team source told the San Francisco Chronicle that Trevor Cahill will make the A's rotation and start the second game of the season.
Cahill will make his final spring start Thursday, which puts him in line to start Game 2 against the Angels. Dallas Braden will get the call on Opening Day. Cahill has a 4.95 ERA and 12/6 K/BB ratio in 20 innings this spring, but has all of six career starts above Single-A and is three weeks removed from his 21st birthday, so early struggles should be expected.

This number 2 business is a little overrated. I'm guessing that it has more to do with how they want to setup the rotation. Maybe split up the 2 rookies? Maybe split up similar types of pitchers or lefty/righty mix? Maybe that's when their turn would have been up continuing on their spring schedule? Maybe Billy Beane has done an intense statistical computation taking into effect the tidal energy and moon phases and the extra gravity on that day will give Cahill's sinker a little extra sink.

It will be interesting to watch the A's rotation to see how everything shakes out. There is so little experience there (esp with Duke out) and Braden and Eveland being unimpressive (and super-super sleeper having a so-so spring though he still is the #1 although not opening day). But even with Cahill and Anderson in the rotation the A's still have some intriguing options to call up later in the season with Gio (minor injury right now), Mazzaro, Outman, and Simmons.
