Hamels over Utley - #2 Pick

Postby IrishDrunk » Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:28 pm

12 team league, 4 keepers per team, 18 round draft.

My Keepers:

J. Santana
Longoria
Carlos Lee
Ichiro

Hamels and Utley are the top two remaining for my to pick at #2.

After Hamels is off the board, the dropdown in SP's is terrible IMO (and my 14th pick would be choosing from a bunch of mooks like like Lackey, Felix, Liriano - ugh - I'm not loving any of those guys as my #2 SP - sure, they are good, but, they don't make my stomach tingle, that's for sure.

If I go Hamels, though, I feel I can get a great 2B (Roberts, Uggla) in the 2nd round no problem without too much drop off from Utley, and I've locked up two AWESOME SP's in Santana and Hamels - on the other hand, if I go Utley, my 2nd SP will be suspect at pick 14....

So, Hamels over Utley is a no brainer, right, in that scenario at least?

Anyway, just kind of wanted to write that off, and was curious as to the thoughts here. ;-D

It would be hard for me to pass on Chase. So I would not do it. You can always pick up SP's but not a Chase Utley. Be safe and go with Chase.

Lots of love for Chase, I see.

Utley's a force I'd LOVE to have, don't get me wrong - but, Utley + Mook #2 SP (IMO) versus #1 SP Hamels to go with my other #1 SP + Not-that-big-a-dropoff-from-Utley 2B seems like a no brainer...

Crazy pills, anyone? :-D

take chase. a lot more SP's i think this year. position wise, chase makes sense. and you know what? someone will give you a big SP for chase. u could always see how you draft then trade away chase. IMO

Ok just cuz i like going against the grain i will... haha... i say Hamels, actually my question on here bout my draft on that team i own Johan and Hamels also and its a studly combo... frankly i don't know how people can say yeah Johan and Felix isn't too much of a fall off from Johan/Hamels and it angers me its bullsh*t... look at Felix if he doesn't shut a team out its no where even close to a chance of a win for him i.e. the 9 wins last year with a crappy seattle offense backing him...you have 2 very nice power guys already and you add roberts in the 2nd round and you won't have to worry about SB the rest of the draft with ichiro already aboard, and if you go uggla you add some extra power... i think the drop off from hamels to felix or lackey is far far larger then from utley to either roberts or uggla... id go with the arm here...

help me out...

keep in mind that Hamels has been experiencing some shoulder issues this spring, which could lead to a bigger problem (should've of worked on conditioning this offseason, instead of touring the media circuit), That would be why I would choose Utley, Young stud pitchings starting to feel shoulder discomfort is never a good thing and usually ends up in TJ surgery.

:dunno:

Hamels had some elbow problems, which they related to nothing more than a muscle strain, and he was treated with anti-inflammatories. MRI's revealed nothing to do with the UCL.

Fantasy owners can take a deep sigh of relief, as Cole Hamels was examined today and was found to have no damage to his left elbow. He underwent a MRI and a dynamic Ultrasound test that revealed no structural issues, so this was likely a case of muscle soreness. This is good news, as the Ulnar Collateral ligament is not involved.
