Hair-brained Draft Strategy???

Postby calecalo » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:35 pm

First, let me say that this strategy came about because I am TERRIBLE at selecting pitchers. Each of the last 3 years, my pitching stats have been WAY below league average. My hitting, on the other hand, has always been above league average. I have always finished in the top half of the overall standings, but my cieling has been 3rd place.

So.... I'm thinking of taking 4 top tier closers WAY EARLY in my draft- and then selecting ZERO starting pitchers. I'm punting Wins and K's. It's a 14-team 5x5 Roto league.

My thoughts are:
1. I can win ERA, WHIP and Saves w/ 4 top tier closers, and finish last in Wins & K's. That gets me 44 points for pitching. Average for a 14 team league is 35 points (and remember, I'm always way below average).
2. Picking closers in the first few rouds will prevent me from taking top tier hitters in those rounds, but by eliminating the 75 or so viable SP's from my selection process, I'll be picking up hitters one to two rounds before everyone else in the league from round 6 on.
3. The sheer volume of hitters I will be selecting will allow me a greater chance of nabbing this years Carlos Quentin/Josh Hamilton.

Dumbest thing you've ever heard? Pure Genius? Thoughts?

I don't think its crazy, but I would tone it down a little bit...

Make sure you 3-4 of the top 8-10 RPs like you said, but near the end of the draft get some of the best middle relievers and a couple lower-tier SPs that wont hurt your ratios. This way you could luck into a 8-10th place finish in W's and K's and still be number 1 in Saves, ERA, WHIP.

Also, make sure you stock up on power hitters or speed guys. You'll be able to trade some of these guys later to make sure you are well above average in all your hitting categories.

You really should be able to still be taking all hitters until the 6-7 round anyway...
