#1 Pick

Postby aillon » Wed Mar 25, 2009 9:11 am

Hi Everyone,

Ok I am what you call a lurker on here. I really don't know what I am doing compared to the other experts on here. But if you could help I would appreciate it.

I have the first over all pick in a ESPN draft. Pitching is more important in this league then others. 10 team head to head league. Who should I take with the 1st pick.

My heart says Hanley Ramirez but my head says Pujols, with the theory that 1st base is easier to fill then a SS. Then I am hoping that Peavy, Perhaps Hamels, and Cliff Lee might still be on the board for my second round pick (20th overall i suppose). Please let me know what you think, I would be happy to help, but you guys know more than me.

You can easily make an argument for Pujols but Ramirez is the consensus pick, especially now that Arod is hurt. In the one draft I had #1 I went with Ramirez but I don't think there's a bad choice to be made here so just go with your instinct.

No matter how much your league bumps SP, Cliff Lee at 20/21 is way too early.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

I agree with the above, you really can't go wrong. I picked 2nd so I ended up with Pujols, too bad for me. ;-) Also don't take Lee that early, he had a monster year last year and it'll be almost impossible to duplicate.

I agree with posters in that either one is fine. I think I would take Pujols but I've never drafter higher then the 7 spot in the last 4 years so I've never had this dilemma.

Unless the league really heavily favors pitching I don't think i would take one in a 10 team league in the first 3 rounds. Johan and Lincecum will most likely be taken before it gets back to you and I feel like your 2nd and 3rd round picks are too early for someone like webb or hamels.

I picked 2nd in my league this year, and I have to say it's (if you have to pick early) the best spot - the decision is made for you. You go w/ whoever is left, but since you have the first pick, I would go with Pujols, but that's just my opinion.
You can't go wrong there, though, barring injury.

As for your second pick def don't take Lee there, if pitching is that important and these guys are flying off the shelf, I'd go with Webb or Hamels. It is too early for these guys, but if pitching is that important...

Not that it matters now.. but I think this is the right choice. As you said you can still get a very solid 1B later in the draft.
