Can anyone clue me in on what the RedSox have planned for Smoltz? I drafted him in the last round last night because, well, just because he's John Smoltz. I thought their plan was to keep him on ice until later in the year but just wanted to double check and see what you all know.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
He'll be in the rotation, although it's not out of the question he could slide to the pen. He signed with Boston to be a starter though and I'm pretty sure that's what they're getting him ready for. I might be wrong but I thought I read where he hasn't picked up a ball since camp opened but he's scheduled to start throwing off a mound really soon. Either way, the Sox are pretty set in the rotation with Beckett, Lester, Dice, Wake and Penny to start the year, although Penny could easily be DL'ed to start the season and Masterson (or Buchholz who has been throwing the heck out of the ball) could take his spot.
Last I read he is supposed to have his first bullpen session soon. He will be in the rotation. Inevitably there will be an injury or two by June and even if not Penny will probably have a 5.00 ERA at that point.
John Smoltz threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery. He reported no problems and is scheduled to throw again Saturday, but is still not expected to join the Red Sox's rotation until June.

IMO the Sox made a AWESOME move by signing Smoltz, He's going to help lead them to the playoff's and is a clutch postseason pitcher. Frank Wren is a ignorant fool for letting Smoltz get away.
