Draft advice... WHIR

Postby PorkRollEggnCheese » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:04 pm

Hey, so i'm in a 10 team, H2H, 6X6 w/holds and OPS, 6 keepers. I've been on this forum for a few years now, but I'm posting this under an alt. username b/c one of my league mates (who knows my username) uses this forum frequently, and I don't want to be giving away any secrets.

Here are my keepers:
reyes,
kinsler,
carlos lee
beltran
braun
teixeria

Anyway, I have a great core of keepers heading into the draft in a few days, and I would like some advice on how to proceed. I first have to tell you about one issue I will be having this season. I will be traveling from week 2 until week 7, and when I say traveling, I mean living in tents in a village of about 100 people in Oaxaca without a reliable source of electricity. Obviously, I wont be able to manage my team for a good 1/4 of the season, and I would like some opinions on how to go about my draft. Specifically, my pitching. Since we have daily lineup changes, I feel I need to think outside the box to stay competitive.

Since it's a holds league, wins, K's and all of the other categories are weighted less, and I was thinking of drafting all my offense, then loading up on closers and setup guys and (focusing on the ones who maintain low whip/era averages). I'll throw in a few steady low whip/era SP's whose downside would be too few K's like lowe, wainwright, harden, and baker. I'd essentially be punting wins and strikeouts which I feel I'd have no chance winning with me being away for so long, and would have a near lock in saves, and holds and be in good position to be competitive in era and whip.

I figure when i come back, I can upload some of my extra batting/closer for a starter or two... maybe find a mid season callup off the WW, and try to re-balance out my squad. Hopefully, I wont be too far out of first place/playoffs when I return. I dunno, let me know if I am overthinking, but I feel like if I stick to my plan of building a team the way I normally would I could be too far out of contention at two months into the season.

Thanks guys, gimme some thoughts, and leave your link.... I always answer in return.

Thats a lot to follow, but I like your strategy of going with a lot of middle relief and closers. Do you have an innings limit? If not fill up on these guys as they could even get you some wins in the process. Another thing I would do would try to get 2 SP like LIncecum, Santana, CC or something with big K potential in the first 5-6 rounds. They may keep you out of the basement in the W and K categories and like you said, you could trade one or both for quantity down the road....

I like your line of thinking, though it wouldn't hurt to nab at least a couple of good SP's for when you get back. Not necessarily or Lincecum or Johan, but some reliable, high K option that you don't need to draft too early (ie, James Shields, Javier Vasquez, etc). Other than that, I think you're on to something. Pitching is much easier to find later on through trades or WW.

Help w/mine?
