Should this trade have been vetoed?

Postby jmurphy_j » Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:02 pm

I had traded: Haren & Ethier for Ichiro.

The trade was vetoed by the league.

To me, this looks like an extremely fair trade. Before I call the other managers in my league ignorant cowards, I want to know: Am I right for being upset at this league?

It's a 12-team, standard 5x5 roto.

Haren"s injury issues makes this a fair trade. even without his injury problems I wouldn't give it a veto vote. Ethier is predicted to put up decent numbers this year, but it's no gaurantee.

They're ignorant cowards :-D

Seriously, this looks like an awfully fair trade. One the one side you have Haren and Ethier. Haren's considered a good SP1 (ADP ~50), though he's injured and has a history of fading. Ethier may break out, though he's modestly priced in drafts (goes in the 120-160 range). Ichiro's the biggest "star" of the group, with an ADP in the 30's. He's an elite source of speed and avg, which could make all the difference to a team that needs to make up for some deficiences in the lineup. Without looking at the teams, I can easily see this being a trade that helps both sides. And that's where the veto probably comes from. You're either playing with idiots, or unethical cowards (who don't want to see those two teams improve themselves, but would be all for something like a James Loney for Albert Pujols trade in their favor).

I would not have done it as I am not a fan of Ichiro at this point, but that deal is not veto worthy.

2-1 deals are the bane of fantasy and the biggest cause of problems, but that deal is not contributing to it. If your league-mates object, I suspect it is a trade-hostile league full of guys that either hate trades in any form or hate any deal that is not perfectly equitable. That is their right if they want to do things that way and I prefer it being like that than being caveat-emptor nonsense where people are arguing anything goes as long as the never provable collusion is not in play.

If it is trade-hostile then act accordingly and veto every deal that comes up that is not 1 for 1 and completely equitable. Otherwise you put yourself at a disadvantage.
