I'm in a 10-team, 5x5 roto, keeper league. We start only 1 catcher in this league.
I drafted Weiters as my catcher, which should work out long-term, but it looks like he will spend a month or two in the minors. I could just pick up Ramon Hernandez or Chris Snyder off waivers to get me through.
However, one team has both Soto and Doumit, so I'd like to try making a trade for Doumit. I figure that I could use Doumit until Weiters establishes himself, and then trade Doumit to somebody else.
The other manager's primary weaknesses are his Util. spot (currently cadidates are either H. Matsui or the injury-prone V. Wells) and the closer position.
Here is my roster...please help be identify who I should offer in a trade for Doumit:
c: Weiters 1b: C. Davis 1b: Carlos Pena 2b: B. Phillips 3b: A-Rod ss: T. Tulowitzki of: C. Crawford of: C. Granderson of: M. Ordonez of: J. Bruce of: H. Pence of: Lastings Milledge of: Elijah Dukes of: J. Upton of: Connor Jackson (also 1b)
sp: T. Lincicum sp: S. Kazmir sp: J. Shields sp: F. Liriano sp: Z. Grienke sp: M. Pelfrey
rp: J. Soria rp: J. Hanrahan rp: H. Bell rp: C. Ray
I don't feel like I can afford to part with a closer. And w/ A-rod hurt, C. Davis will have to start the year at 3b, so I prefer not to give up a 1b, either. As you can see, I'm overflowing with outfielders. So which of my outfielders would be a fair offer for Doumit?
Try Milledge first, then Dukes. Pence or Jackson might be fair value, but Weiters should be up fairly quickly, so trading a solid OF to get a good catcher that you may not need in a month seems unnecessary. I'd try Milledge or Dukes, but with Weiters on the way, anything else may be overpaying. Of course, Ray's not the O's closer, so offering him would also be an option, and I don't know what Bell's going to bring to the table. He could be good, but it's a bit up in the air. The biggest thing is don't give up a lot for Doumit when you have Weiters. Now, you could trade Pence or Jackson (preferably Pence since Jackson's got 1B-eligibility and Pence is only a OF--where you are WAY too crowded) for him if you can get a solid pitcher for Weiters.
Again, for the third time, don't overpay for Doumit when you may not need him soon.
Thanks for the response. You summed up my feelings almost exactly. In fact, I was planning to offer Milledge for Doimit, but I wanted to make sure i was on the right track. I have no intention of over-paying for Doumit...I doubt I would even part with Pence. Milledge, C. Jackson, Dukes are all up for grabs, and I'll happily throw in Ray...but that's about my limit.
Of Course, if anybody has a different take on the issue, your input is always welcome.
