Keeper league. 12 teams. 5 keepers with a luxury tax for a 6th Scoring includes for hitters: R, H, 1b, 2b, 3b, HR, RBI, BB, SB, K, FPCT, AVG, OPS pitchers: IP, W, L, CG, SHO, SV's, H, HR's, BB's, K's , Holds, ERA, WHIP It is a head to head league. 6 teams make the playoffs with 2 byes
Those are the categories, we are expanding to 7 keepers after the draft and going into next year. I only will be keeping 5 because I'm keeping Cole Hamels to deal for pick 8 and pick 32 post keepers.
My keepers: 1B-Pujols 2B-Kinsler 3B-Longoria CF-B.J. Upton RF-Hamilton
I own picks 8,9,10,15,32,34,39 in the top 50. The main picks I'm looking at are picks 8,9,10,15 but figured knowing the picks I had immediately after that might help me with informed posts.
I know for a fact that Roy Halladay is going pick 1. I have suspicions about who else will go high, but here is a list of the next top available, ranked as I view them.
Bay, Fielder, Peavy, Ortiz, Billingsley, Liriano, Rios, McLouth, Gallardo, James Shields, Lackey, Chris Davis, Dye, Chipper, Vlad, Wieters, Upton, Furcal, Hardy, Ludwick, Martin, Soto, Ibanez, Mo, K-Rod, Soria, Lidge, Kazmir, Harden (top 30).
I suspect Bay, Fielder, Peavy Ortiz will follow Halladay in some order. Ideally Bay is the guy I really want at 8, since he'd fill my void in LF. I obviously need a few arms. Keep in mind I do like some arms later, and will be targeting Bedard and Parra, as well as some other arms, so I don't necessarily have to go all arms early.
Is 8-10 too early for Wieters? I really want him, and given we are expanding to 7 keepers and I have a solid core, plus a ton of early picks, I think the gamble might be worthwhile. I'd much rather wait until 15, but am I really pushing it?
I'm also thinking Rios or McLouth would be a solid choice because the speed would be helpful to mix with what I've already got (Kinsler, Upton). However, I'll throw in this caveat, I really want Justin Upton, and would consider him at 15.
I have a few thoughts on what I'm going to do, I'd like 2 arms early (hopefully Billingsley, Liriano/Gallardo), Wieters, and Upton maybe with my first 4 picks. Probably Bedard with 32 or 34 and maybe Hardy or Peralta with the other pick.
So my questions: Where should I take Wieters? What do you think of my rankings of top 30, who would you move up/down (namely the pitchers Billingsley, Liriano, Gallardo, Shields)? Who would you target with the deep scoring cats and my keeper core?
A lot of questions, take any stabs at whatever you would like, and as always, I'll be happy to respond if you leave a link. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I like where your head's at. I would take Weiters with one of your 8-10 picks to ensure that you land him. It's definitely a reach, but I would do it in a keeper league with all of those picks you have.
I really don't think Bay or Rios will make it to you. If they are gone, I would take Davis for sure.
I would try to stay away from Ortiz, McLouth, Lackey and Chipper.
With Davis & Weiters I would grab Bills. If he's gone I would consider Upton/Furcal and then grabbing the best SP with pick 15 (Gallardo or Liriano).
Overall the top 30 look good. I would think of moving Chipper down because of injuries and Dye down because of age. This moves young guys like Davis up and rightfully so in a keeper. On the topic of Weiters, in an 8-team, with one keeper at each position, I was able to get him with my 6th pick, which is effectively the 21st round. Basically, keep looking at your rankings and if you really want him, and think he will go before you can get him, pick him. Sure, you could regret drafting him so early, but its 10 times worse not drafting him when you wanted to and then having him be a stud.
One last note, be careful with Ludwick, even as a life-long Cardinals fan, I am far from being sold on him. Super-injury prone, not that all injuries were his fault, but he has a beat up body. Terrible spring so far as well. Good luck!
It may seem like a bit of a reach, but I like Wieters with one of your 8-10 picks. He will turn into a top 5 fantasy catcher as soon as he is brought up. As far as pitchers go, I would go Bills/Shields/Gallardo/Liriano.
i don't think Wieters is that far of a stretch in the 8-10 spot... with you having 8-10 you have alot of options there... I would get Wieters, the arms i rank Billingsley, Liriano, Shields, Gallardo... imo if bay is there definitely snag him, but my ideal 8-10 if bay is gone target Wieters, Bills, Davis, Upton then go to: Liriano, Shields, Furcal, Gallardo, Soto, Vlad, Lackey, Martin, Hardy... hope this helps... thanks for the help on mine...

my thoughts as well. Wieters there is not a stretch since you can keep him, but definitely get Bay if he's there. and I pretty much rank the rest the same way as well.
So, if everybody keeps the minimum five, you've got picks 68,68,70, and 75. Very nice since your league is expanding its keepers. I would advise using two of those slots for young up and comming players, and two slots for the proven veteren types that will help you win this year.
Given that, my advice is as follows
Younger up and comming that will help this year
Chris Davis - Perfect pick in that late 60- early 70 range Stehphen Drew - Not ranked, I like this guy a lot in keeper leagues due to SS being so thin. Joey Votto - If Davis is off the board, I like him a lot esp in a OPS league.
Veteren SP Dan Haren - Not on list because he is kept? If not, I would grab him. Billingsley
Hitters A Shortstop - I would use pick 75 to grab a SS. SS thin this year, and you're going to wait 15 more picks, and which point all the second tier guys might be gone. Rios Vlad
If you want Wieters you will need to get him in round 9 IMO. Since it's a keeper that reach in round 9 is a little more justified, but be ready to have to pick another catcher to use for potentially the first two months and use up a roster space for Wieters since he won't be on the DL.
Thanks for the help so far. Yes Haren is kept. I didn't specify, but three teams are keeping 5, the rest are keeping 6 (including myself, though as I've said, I'm dealing my 6th keeper to get that 8th pick). So essentially the first pick in the draft is pick 70. Drew is also kept. I would have loved to have been able to select him or Tulo, but both are kept. 6 SS are kept: Hanley, Reyes, Rollins, Drew, Tulo, Jeter. That leaves Furcal, Hardy, Ramirez (not a huge fan of his given the added stats in my league), Young, Peralta.
I'd also like to add that I know what I'm in for waiting on Wieters, I played the same game with Longoria last year (and Bruce for a while even). I also have some other catchers I wouldn't mind pairing with him to use while he's in the minors or splitting time, they include: Pablo Sandoval, Chris Iannetta and if they fly off the board too early, Ramon Hernandez, Mike Napoli, Salty, Clement. If I'm able to get Pablo or Iannetta at a reasonable price, I'll likely flip them to a catcher desperate team after Wieters gets the call. I just love the thought of drafting a catcher that could conceivably put up 1B numbers

With 8-9-10 you could take Wieters if you want him, but he may very well fall to you at 15, depends how intent you are on getting him. I like your top12 ahead of him, except maybe McCLouth, but I would take him before Chipper, Dye and Vladdy.
Wieters is a stud by all accounts, but until he does it in the bigs, there is always the question if he's legit. Not too long ago Delmon Young, Alex Gordon and Phi Hughes were can't miss.
