Ugh, retrospective: V-Mart and Gallardo for A-Gone + WHIR

Postby plapre3 » Fri Mar 20, 2009 7:34 pm

At literally the last minute of my league's keeper deadline I was offered a deal that I accepted. Normally, I'm much better at making decisions once I've had the time to consider all options, consult stats, and of course, hear what ya'll have to say. However, without those luxuries, I jumped on a deal that gave me the best player and hopefully, more stability. Please let me know what you all think. Bonus Question: how do you like my team heading into the draft?

I gave: Victor Martinez and Yovanni Gallardo
I got: Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young (SP-SD).

Right now, I regret the deal, but I pretty much always suffer from buyer's remorse. I like that I got a sure thing in A-Gone (and the best player in the deal) and cut down on 2 question marks in V-Mart and Gallardo, even though Young is another one. Since many are asking about catchers, the ONLY catchers kept are: Mauer, Martin, McCann, V-Mart, and Soto. Everyone else is available.

As for my keepers, I like to break them into tiers in order to sort them out. I'm keeping all 3:
1st Tier: Johan Santana, Carlos Beltran, Adrian Gonzalez, Corey Hart, Adam Dunn, Joe Nathan
2nd Tier: Joakim Soria, Zach Greinke, Michael Young
3rd Tier: Chris Young (SP-SD)
--------------------------------------
I also have an extra 15th round pick.

As for minor leaguers, I keep 5 for free:
1) Colby Rasmus (OF-Stl)
2) Matt LaPorta (1B-Cle)
3) Neftali Feliz (SP-Tex)
4) Josh Vitters (3B-ChiNL)
5) Michael Bowden (SP-Bos)

6x6 weekly HtH 14 team roto keeper (between 5 and 10 keepers (no time limits or costs), losing a draft pick for each after 5)
Offensive Categories: BA, OPS, RBI, HR, SB and Runs Scored.
Pitching Categories: W, S, ERA, K/IP, Quality Starts minus Losses, and WHIP
Offensive Starters: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 0F, 0F, 0F, UTIL
Pitching Starters: SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP
Bench: 10 spots
Minors: 5 "free" keepers. These players if are eligible to be kept without the loss of a draft pick and in addition to the max of 10.

Thank you all in advance and as always, leave a link.

I like to have my catcher position locked up asap, though in my league we each start 2 so that makes vmart pretty valuable. I wouldnt have made the deal, because while agon may be better judged side by side, im confident you could get another 1B thats just as good while im unsure you can find a catcher who can replace vmart.

please help with mine.

I don't mind the trade at all even though it's the loss of Gallardo that bothers me more than Victor.

A-Gon goes well ahead of Victor in redrafts this year, and as long as you know there are catching options in the restocking draft (and I hope that 15th rounder you mentioned means the 5th round after the 10 keepers), you will be OK. Iannetta is my personal favorite sleeper at C this year, but Sandoval, Doumit, Napoli, Navarro, and Hernandez all would work, too.

Gallardo should be back and killer this year. So, too, should Young. Young's a lot older though, and be careful: as good as he is, he would tank worse than nearly anyone on the SD roster outside of Petco (although Bell, Meredith, and others certainly would fall, too).

I like the trade because I like to wait on the catcher position so you can probably pick up another later.

I love the trade. I would take gallardo a little a head of young, but I like adrian wayy better than vmart.

losing Gallardo is tough, but Young is pretty good himself. Gonzalez is a beast. its unfortunate hes stuck at that park in San Diego. if he ever got out of San Diego he would be a 1st round pick putting up 40+ HR. Young's numbers last season wernt great, but i expect him to bounce back to similar numbers he had from 2007/2006. with more run support he should be able to increase his win totals into the mid teens.

I may be a little biased as a Padre fan but I'm in agreement with this opinion. I don't think V-Mart is that great especially with Shoppach there. Chris Young should come back strong. He was one of the best during the '06 season. The injuries last season really affected him.

Definitely a flip a coin type deal, very fair, but I'd prefer what you gave up, and I'm not someone who loves having a keeper catcher. However, I don't like Chris Young at all, and I love Yovani Gallardo. There is obviously a huge disparity between Gon and V-Mart, but I like that V-Mart has hit some HR's in the spring. Chris Young is pretty good in SD, but I don't think any better then that, and given that they still wouldn't mind shaving pay roll in SD, I would be very concerned of Chris Young getting moved given his XFB tendencies. I also don't like that runners that get on against Young steal at will on him, so singles are essentially doubles for anyone with a lick of speed. Those facts don't leave a lot of room for error for Young.

All that said, I do really like Gonzalez, and though it's unlikely, maybe you could get lucky and have someone overwhelm the Padres in a trade offer for him (which they'd have to consider with Blanks raking in the high minors). Obviously that's unlikely, and they'd be more inclined to dealing Blanks, buuuuuut not unheard of.

Like I said, decent deal, but I wouldn't have done it. Good luck though. If you don't mind, I could use some help with mine as well. Thanks in advance.
