Keeper Math Problem - WHIR

Postby Lenny6 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:23 pm

I'm in a 12-team weekly points CBS H2H $260 auction keeper league and I can keep up to 13 players or $156, whichever comes first. Because of the scoring, quality starting pitchers tend to get overvalued. I have included CBS' projected points based on our scoring system. Who would you keep off of this roster?

Miguel Cabrera 1B ($43) - 577 projected points [Berkman, Morneau, and maybe Teixeira will also be available at auction]
Vladimir Guerrero OF ($40) - 510 pts
Adam Dunn OF ($29) - 499 pts
Aramis Ramirez 3B ($18) - 502 pts [Wright, ARod, Atkins, Zimmerman, Chipper will be available]
Brian McCann C ($14) - 436 pts
Aaron Harang SP ($13) - 488 pts
Matt Garza SP ($12) - 448 pts
Carlos Delgado 1B ($10) - 475 pts
Connor Jackson 1B/OF ($10) - 462 pts
Jamie Moyer SP ($10) - 368 pts
James Shields SP ($10) - 519 pts
Scott Baker SP ($9) - 418 pts
Howie Kendrick 2B ($8) - 314 pts [Utley will be available]
Ryan Braun OF ($5) - 551 pts
Stephen Drew SS ($5) - 454 pts
Alex Gordon 3B ($5) - 394 pts
Jair Jurjjens SP ($5) - 445 pts
Kevin Slowey SP ($5) - 402 pts

Easy cuts are Guerrero (only scored 448 points last year so the projection seems optimisitc), Moyer, and Dunn (could probably get him back for the same or less if I wanted to). Definite keepers are Braun, Drew and Shields. Right now I'm also leaning towards keeping Ramirez, McCann, Garza, Baker, Jurjjens and Slowey as well. The toughest choices are Cabrera (could have monster season, but could I get him or one of the other top guys back for about the same?), Harang (if he rebounds he is definitely worth it - he was a top-10 pitcher in our scoring in '06 & '07), Delgado (worth it if he continues what he did last year, and could soften the blow of dumping Cabrera back), Jackson (I like the two position eligibility, but he hasn't put everything together yet), Gordon (only $5 for a bunch of potential), and Kendrick (could be worth it if healthy, but I think worst case scenario is I end up back with him for about the same price).

My first stab is: Ramirez, McCann, Harang, Garza, Delgado, Shields, Baker, Braun, Drew, Gordon, Jurjjens, and Slowey - 12 players for $111. It gives me a decent start on a lineup and plenty of money to bid on an ace SP, a stud 1B, and a couple of good OF mates for Braun and fill in with a cheap closer and 2B plus a couple of bench sleepers.

What would your keeper list be? Thanks, and as always I will return the help if you leave a link!

I like your list, but I would dump Harang and Delgado and find a way to splurge on Cabrera ... unlike Vlad, he is young and possibly getting better still.

Spend the money on MCab. Decide to throw back Gordon if you want, but if you can keep Harang/Baker/Shields/Jurjjens/Slowey you are pretty much set on SP and can avoid having to draft any. With the list I bolded, you are spending $132 on 11 guys. You have to bid smartly on a 2B (maybe keep Kendrick instead) and OF's. But you basically have another $120 for those guys. A $40 OF will be tough but you can probably afford it. UNLESS you can get Zimmerman for less than $18, this would be my list. If Zimm is cheaper, I'd throw ARam back into the pool and make sure I get him.
