2B/Alexi Ramirez question

Postby lbblue » Thu Mar 19, 2009 12:44 pm

I'm picking at #12 in a 12 team league, serpentine draft. There is a fair chance that Ian Kinsler and Chase Utley will both be gone before the #12 pick but I'd happily take either one of them there. If I do miss those guys I don't have another pick until #36/#37 and, considering lack of really top options at 2B, it's not out of the realm of possibility to think that Phillips, Roberts, and Pedroia will all be off the board. One of them will probably be there but I'm going through the "what if" scenarios to make sure I'm prepared during the draft.

I'm not one to make a habit of reaching for players in the draft, but I was wondering how much of a reach it would be to take Alexi Ramirez with the #37 pick (first pick in the 4th round) if the scenario does play out like this. Seems like he generally goes in the mid/late 4th.

Obviously I can't tell you who else at other positions will be on the board but I guess I have two questions:

1. How many of you think Ramirez will actually produce up to the level of a guy taken at #37?

2. If Ramirez is the best 2B on the board and I pass with the #36/#37 pick, who do I target for 2B (next picks will be #60/#61)?

I would target Pedroia over Alexi, he doesnt walk so I see .250 15 hrs for 2nd season but worthy of top 10 2b stats.

I drafted in the same position as you in a 12 team roto and got Alexei at the 60th pick end of 5th round. I think 4th round is too early however, if you are picking at the turn and your 4th round pick is essentially your 5th round also then I guess its a tough call because its a good chance he will be gone at 60. Make yourself feel better and pick him in the 5th one pick later :-]

If you re-read my scenario you'll see that I have Pedroia already off the board so I would be targeting him before Ramirez. I take it if you're expecting .250 AVG and 15 HR from Ramirez then you don't feel like he's worth anything near the #37 pick, unless you think he's going to steal 30+ bases and drive in some runs.

that would be correct at this point I say Uggla is a better option as Ramirez is a 6th round pick, you could go with Kendrick as well good BA or Richie Weeks, this could be his make or break year and should give 15 hrs 20 sbs

I think he probably will be gone. First off, his ADP is higher than 60. Secondly, this draft takes place in Chicago and almost everyone in the league lives there. There are at least two White Sox fans in the league who may pull the trigger on him a little earlier than most. So I think there is very little chance he's around at #60.

If I were you I wouldnt take Ramirez that early, you can wait and pick up Kelly Johnson much later and get better value for the round your selecting him in, I have your same situation and I have a target on Kelly Johnsons back.

I'm tired of Kelly Johnson type production though.
Alexei had some serious RBI numbers last year and in 460 or so at bats.

I'd say the 1st pick of the 4th may be a litte early, but yeah if you want him, he won't be there when your next picks come up again. If I were you and missed out on Alexei/don't want to take him that early, I'd target Aaron Hill instead of Johnson.

I dont go into a draft trying to fill positions. I will always take the best available guy on the board for at least the first 7-8 rounds. Then I will look to fill holes. Every fantasy team has holes in it. Most guys will have holes at 2b this year after the top 3 or 4 so dont sweat it.

I agree, after 8th round I satrt to fill holes that I have, but usually I have 1 or 2 sleepers in mind that I know will either be not drafted or later rounds, Adam Lind, Adam Jones, Alex Gordon, Kurt Suzuki
