I see that Rollins is going around 8-10. Does he really deserve to be a first round pick?
I can see how he can be ranked that high, with the large drop off after the top 3 in SS and the upside of a 30-50 season.
I have the 10th pick in a H2H 10 team league that also counts OBP and SLG (K/9 BAA for pitchers).
I know he isn't that great in the OBP/SLG categories, but since SS is so shallow would he be worth considering.
Here's my reasoning. We only start 3 OF and 1B is pretty deep. The players I'm going to be looking at at the 10 spot would be Tex/Hamilton/Berkman/Utley depending on who falls.
Is position scarcity enough to warrant taking Rollins this high? Also grabbing a bat that makes up for the lack of OBP/SLG like Tex?
I like to grab guys where position scarcity is an issue first. That said, Rollins is probably the one that I cringe the most at taking (perhaps because I am a Met fan, who knows). If Utley is available, I would absolutely take him first. His hip seems to be fine and he is swinging away in ST.
Unless I am ending up with Sizemore/Braun/Hamilton, I take the infielder for 10th overall pick. Kinsler is another option, if he is available. I don't think it is too crazy to take him with either 10th or 11th overall. Personally, I take Kinsler over Rollins too (but Utley over Kinsler), because while SS might be a little more difficult to replace than 2B, I like Kinsler for contributing well this year. Rollins I have less faith in for a "bounce back" year.
If you are picking at the end of the 1st round why not take rollins and Kinsler/Pedroia with your pics. 2 top positions where scarcity kicks in, and you have top 3 dudes there. Why not?
I've given that a thought (drafting Utley/Kinsler and Rollins).
It would obviously make it a lot easier to fill out my lineup by capitalizing on the depth in SP, 1B, and OF.
My plan right now is to pick 9 bats out of my first 10 picks and try to build as solid an offense as I can. So this would definitely help, but taking two injury prone low MI who don't provide great OBP and SLG would be risky.
Rollins has moved so far up my draft board that I'm considering taking him at 6 instead of Sizemore or Braun. Rollins was going around 6 last season but didn't put up 1st round numbers. The reason was he had a high ankle sprain early in the season that caused him to miss around 25 games. After the season ended, he pretty much admitted that the ankle was an issue all season.
I see very little difference between Reyes and Rollins this season. Reyes more SB's and possibly a little higher average, Rollins even with Reyes in runs, HR's and RBI's. That combined with the dropoff after Rollins to a guy like Furcal has me really considering him at 6.
