I think Peavy's the better player, but there are couple of issues with it.
1. Peavy's on the Padres. He's around 1/4 of their payroll. That kind of shows what kind of offense he's got behind him.
2. You have the pitching to spare. Felix and Johan is a stud duo, and I would expect Verlander to come back strong, and Bedard shold be a decent option as well. Weeks isn't a bad option, but Phillips is a great one, top-5 at the position for sure (behind Utley, Kinsler, Pedroia, and a close call with Roberts). I'd do it based on need, but you MIGHT be able to get a bit more for Peavy as far as talent, but 2B is your only legitimate hole.
Normally I would never give up a stud pitcher like Peavy BUT I would do this trade for to reasons
First I think Phillips has the potential to breakout and that raises his ceiling and the profit you can make on him for now and as trade bait later
Second, I do not like what i have seen from Peavy in the WBC. Granted this is very early in the season but I think he has lost some velocity. Now combine this where he plays and you are looking at a 14 win pitcher in good times.
Dont do it. Weeks is basically a Phillips-lite. I just think you'd be better served to shop Peavy around first before you traded him. All youre really getting with this trade is a slight bump in .avg. Youre also losing 180 K's and a terrific whip.
Seeing as how all 5 of your top arms have ?'s this season, I'd say no. Wait to see what you're working with out of your arms, if they all come out flying, then sell hard
I am down on Peavy personally. Taking into consideration the bad team behind him with the Padres and his poor WBC showing, I think that you need to sell high on him while you have the chance.
