Who to take at #8?

Postby JagATC » Fri Mar 13, 2009 12:32 pm

Got the 8th pick in a 10 team 5x5 roto with standard scoring. Teams get 2 keepers. I'm keeping Bills and Quentin.
Looks like Longoria, Howard, Kinsler, Pedroia, and Tex are being kept among others.

My question...looking at the first 7 picks....more than likely Pujols, Sizemore, Han Ram, M Cab, Reyes...and you know the rest...

With Kinsler and Pedroia being kept, would it be a stretch to take Brian Roberts at #8 to shore up a quality 2B with steals, avg., and runs? (I'm still questioning Utley's hip and not sure if Rollins will bounce back like he did in '07). Then come back with the 13th pick overall (my 2nd round pick) and look for a guy like Prince Fielder, Carlos Lee, Lance Berkman, etc.

Yes ... way too early for Roberts at 8. Hell, I'd hold off on a 2b for a while. What about Utley? is he gone? He's got power and a little speed. How about Phillips? is he gone/kept? I'd take them over roberts ...

but it is not the time to be reaching for steals. at 2nd base I'd wait for Uggla, you can get steals from anywhere in the late rounds anyway. If Uggla goes before you get to him, take the best player and draft sleeper Jose Lopez (can be 1b/2b) or catch Aviles slightly earlier (because I've noticed a lot of people scooping him up earlier than his ADP lately).

who else is gone ... what's a list of the top 10 or 15 players that are left to choose from.

In short ... positional scarcity is just something to help you draft ... it shouldn't scare you into taking someone wayyyyyyyyy too early.

Is there a rule you can't keep great players? Whay are Pujols, Sizemore, Hanram, MCAB, Reyes not being kept?????? I would love to have a top 3 pick in a league that didn't keep guys like that.

8 is way too high for Roberts especially if Utley is still there or even Rollins. 2B is not terribly deep but there are guys like Kendrick, Jose Lopez, Cano and Uggla who will be around later to pick up which allows you to take one of the studs still available at 8

We can only keep 2 players per year and a player can not be kept in back to back years. Example....I drafted Billingsley in the 14th round last year and by keeping him this year, he becomes my 14th round pick. If I were to trade him away during the season, the person I trade him to, couldn't keep him next year because I kept him this year.

That's why so many studs are available.

For the person who asked for a list of 10-15 that will probably be available....here's my best guess thinking about who is being kept and who will be picked 1st-7th.

Johan Santana
Josh Hamilton
Jimmy Rollins
Chase Utley
Matt Holliday
CC Sabathia
Prince Fielder
Justin Morneau
Jake Peavy
Manny Ramierez
