Anybody have inside knowledge on either SP Hanson (ATL) or SP Cahill (OAK)? Both are "projected" as studs and are available in some leagues, but as NA. Are either of these guys (or both) worth grabbing now, depending on your SP depth of course, and not worrying about Waiver during the season if/when they make the rotation? I just remember how everyone was flying after names such as Lincecum, Gallardo, Scherzer, Kersahw, Hughes, etc ... thought stashing now might eliminate the gamble. Thanks for info on them!
I think Hanson is more likely to see more time in the bigs than Cahill, and he's likely a better prospect anyway, depending on who you're talking to. Personally, I have Hanson a tad higher than Cahill, with Brett Anderson (also an A's SP prospect) in between them.
Hanson has been turning heads in spring training, but as of today is slated to start in the minors. IMO, Hanson has more upside than Cahill and will probably be brought into the bigs before T. Cahill. If you have a deep bench and play in a keeper league it would be very wise to pounce on Hanson in the ladder stages of the draft.
I've heard Hanson is doing well in ST, albeit half rosters that he's going against. He blew away hitters in the Minors and that's nothing to just overlook. I am NOT in a keeper league, but I have enough pitching that I could drop someone like Cueto and hold onto Hanson until he's called up (fingers crossed).
Rotoworld said he has a 3.38 ERA this spring but, "He's flashing plenty of potential this spring. Still, there's only a slight chance that the Braves will keep him even if Tom Glavine has to start the year on the DL. There wouldn't be much point to making him the fifth starter initially and then sending him down in mid-April."
I would not drop Cueto for Hanson this year. Cueto has a chance to be special this year where we don't know if Hanson will start the year in the minors of pros. Every year players do great in ST and fail to carry that over into the Regular Season. In your situation I would keep what you got.
Hanson will have a hard time breaking into the rotation this season. He has been nasty so far this spring and has taken his ERA down below 3, but there are to many vet. pitchers in the rotation from him to be anything more then an injury replacement pitcher for this season. 2010 though will be a break out year for hanson, if I was in a keeper league I would think about picking him up on the cheap this season and having an ace for years for less then half of what he is worth.
Update: Cahill allowed one run on four hits over five innings on Saturday.
Recommendation: Cahill continued his bid for a rotation spot with a solid start, and his chances were also helped by the news that Gio Gonzalez won’t be ready due to injury; it’s looking more and more likely that either Cahill or Brett Anderson will emerge as the fifth starter for the A’s when the season starts.
hanson is the better prospect but will not get a rotation spot unless someone is injured to start the season out of lowe, jurrjens, kawakami, vasquez or glavine. cahill is very close to making the rotation because ducherer and gio will be injured to start the season. cahill is has very good strikeouts..1-1 k-ip and he gets a lot of groundballs. i think cahill is a nice sleeper to the avg fantasy player because most are caught up on hanson/feliz/porcello...cahill could fly under the radar.
