Ortiz vs. Hart vs. Bruce. WHIR

Postby bustoniu » Thu Mar 12, 2009 10:39 pm

Hey everybody. I play in a standard yahoo keeper league which keeps 7 players, of which i chose 5, but I can not decide on the last two. Between Ortiz (UTIL), Hart (OF), and Bruce (OF), which 2 should i keep? I have until this coming Wednesday to finalize my keepers, your help is deeply appreciated.

My 5 keepers so far:
Ryan Braun (OF)
Ryan Howard (1B)
BJ Upton (OF)
Matt Kemp (OF)
Cole Hamels (SP)

I would keep Hart and Bruce. They're both young and have yet to reach their ceilings. Ortiz is an injury risk and no longer has Manny's protection (although the RedSox offense isn't bad).

Bruce and Ortiz if you ask me. Big Papi isn't going to put up the same numbers he did when Manny was hitting behind him, but he'll still put up really good power numbers and a pretty high batting avg. His wrist is not hurting him this year so he should be in pretty good shape, it just depends on who's hitting right behind him (hopefully Youkilis) and how often teams will pitch to him with men on base. Bruce is a star in the making, and he should have a nice breakout year this season. So that's who I would go for.

I see Hart as potentially having a tough, tough year. He's hacktastic, and pitchers fed him nothing but sliders and pitches off the plate as the year progressed last year. His numbers suffered substantially as a result.

You say you're playing in a standard yahoo league, which I assume means 3 OF spots and 1 Util.

If that's the case, you're planning to keep someone that will end up on your bench...which I don't like. Can you try and deal any of these guys in a 2-for-1 for a starting pitcher or middle infielder? Do you have anyone else worth keeping?

If you're stuck with this list, I'd keep Bruce for sure and then Papi.

this is exactly my dilemma, having 3 OF spots and 1 Util. I got bombarded by Braun and Upton losing their 3B and 2B respectively.

I know by keeping Ortiz i will eventually trade him within two years or just phase him out. I can have my 4th outfielder hold the Util spot. In addition, BJ Upton health reports are good but i don't think he at 100 percent even when he returns (1+ weeks after opening day).

Hart had a weak 1/4 of the season followed by a dismal 2nd half. He falls behind the count and hack at stuff outside the strike zone. However, i think he has room to grow (27 year old effect) and he is killing it this spring. On the other hand, i am not a big fan of having multiple players (Braun) from the same team on my roster.

Re-framing the question, for this year, which player will have more trade value and give me a better chance of winning?

with this question its kinda hard, cuz MANY many people are down on Papi cuz of the injury, but there again not so many people are high on Hart after as you stated his dismal 2nd half... IMO i say keep Bruce and Hart, both are young enough, and i think you could get pretty good value for Hart... actually another thought, scout your league, ask around for fans of particular teams, palyers, etc. i know its dumb and all but heck some people will be higher on either simply because of liking them ya know... but if it were me i know you would be stacking at a position and would have to bench 1 of them either way so i would go with youth rather then banking on trading for value this season and go with Bruce and Hart....

help me out...
