Soto + for Weiters +... Complicated, but WHIR

Postby DaveClay12 » Thu Mar 12, 2009 9:48 pm

In a 14-team hth 6x6 (OPS and QS added). I'm coming off the championship last year, but the owner in 2nd has as good a team as I do, and extra draft picks through a trade. So, I have up to ten major league keepers (we lose our first draft pick for each pick after five).

We play one at each offensive position and one Util, with 5 SP and 3 RP each week.

My definite keepers are:

Soto
Kinsler
J. Reyes
Braun
Quentin
Peavy
Kazmir

My almost definite keepers are:

Ludwick
Chris R. Young (SP-SD)

and Mariano Rivera and Carlos Marmol would be fighting for keeper spot #10.

My minors, which are free keepers that don't count against the limit, are: Snider, Bumgarner, Lars Anderson, Jhoulys Chacin, and Jess Todd.

The team 2nd from the bottom last year (an expansion team) said that he would think about it if I traded Soto to him for Matt Wieters, whom I could keep for free. I suggested that I could add one of my minors players (Chacin) for a draft pick to even it up. This would free up another keeper spot for either the loser of the Mariano/Marmol battle, or Chris Iannetta, if Marmol winds up losing the job to Kevin Gregg (hahahahaha), so the deal would, effectively, wind up being Soto and Chacin for Wieters, Mariano/Marmol/Iannetta, and a draft pick. Having a top catcher is very important to me, but I think that, in a year or two, Weiters might be the best in baseball. Am I wrong?

Should I do it? If so, what round pick should I ask for? If not, would I rather keep Mariano or Marmol (assuming he wins the job)?

Thanks for the help in advance on a complicated question. Leave a link and I will help you out ASAP (though, as a teacher, it might take me a little while, so please be patient).

Dave

I think I would. You already have a stacked team and I don't think losing Soto will hurt you very much. Weiters will probably be playing in June so you just have to find a replacement C for 2 months. Plus you are getting a C that has the ability to be a top 10 player overall.

Are you adding in Chacin for a draft pick to make the deal better for him? If so, let me first say that I like Jhoulys quite a bit and don't see him as a throw-in. I don't know what picks he has therefore can't recommend what pick to ask for, but I feel it should be a significant pick. At this point Soto has to be seen as more valuable than Weiters - whether or not you agree that's the angle you must play.

I do think that Soto may be in for a bit of regression as the league has made adjustments on him. I feel that will mostly come in the form of AVG though - a drop to .270ish seems right. I'd still pencil him in for 20 - 25 HR and 75 - 85 RBI. Maybe even more as it seems that Aramis Ramirez has learned to take a walk and is upping his OBP so Soto may have more chances to drive him in.

Can't even knock Mariano - but in a keeper league Marmol has to be the choice. If you do the deal though I'd keep both RP since you start 3. Even if Marmol "loses" the job to Gregg I'd keep him over Ianetta - it will only be a matter of time before he reclaims that job from Gregg and his mediocrity.

So all-in-all - I say do it but don't just toss in Jhoulys... ;-D

I would do it.

Wieters should be up this summer at some point so you need a catcher for a couple of months.
Chacin being added you need to make sure it is for a pretty good draft pick or I would try to keep him.
Thanks for the help on mine.

I would do the only if you feel you can get a catcher taht you will be satisfied with for at least teh first 4 months. unlike most i feel weiters will not make much or any impact this year...future looks extremely bright but if this year you havea chance to win (which looks good as the rest of ur keepers are awesome) make sure you can get a decent catcher. as for mariano/marmol...again if u wantto win this yrear rivera, if future is more important take marmol. iannetta is good but after a bump in his road dont keep him and you may be able to get him back in draft. if you add in teh youngster ask for a draft pick that would be about the value of when you could get a player of say pence/burnett/ huff range. usually about a 10th round of 14 team league.

I agree. While I don't think it'll take 4 months necessarily, but you will definitely be w/o a star (or most likely an above average) catcher for the 1st few months of this year. If you feel you can sustain this and would like to look toward the future, then this will be good for you.

You can tread water for a while until Wieters is up for good and then be happy with the move for the long term...
