I was wondering how you would change your draft strategy for a normal 5x5 H2H league when there are 14 teams as opposed to 12. My guess is that positions where talent is scarce after the top few players, like third base this year, gain value because there is a bigger difference between the 1st and 14th best 3B than from the 1st to 12th. Am I right, and is there anything else I need to consider?

I wouldn't change your draft strategy for the most part. You just need to make sure your rankings are deep enough.
I have a 14 man draft coming up in a week and have only played in 12 man leagues before.
Normally I take closers by drafting those bottom-tier ones at the end of the draft when others don't know who they are. I was toying with the idea of using a 4-th rounder on a top-tier guy like Nathan, Papelbon, or K-Rod this year. Would you suggest something like this? I would bet that somebody in the league punts saves outright (which I won't do). I even forsee that middle relief may be valuable both for low ERA & K's but also for potential saving likelihood: guys like Balfour & Scot Shields, etc.

i wouldnt take a closer that early. but do make sure to get as many as possible, as they will run out quicker. i suggest to take them in a bunch in the mid-late rounds
and since its h2h id suggest punting a cat...i usually punt steals in my 14 team league

If you punt a category, you are basically starting out losing 1-0 every week. Over the season you're basically 0-20. I don't know if I agree with that.

I've never been thrilled with the punt a category idea in 5x5, especially since its SB and SVs that are most commonly punted. The easiest thing to find in a draft late is steals, so why set out to punt this category?
What you can do is allow your team to be weak in a certain category. Instead of drafting 2-3 closers, settle on 1 and accept that you'll lose some weeks to saves, but will also pick up a few. Spend a 8th-9th round pick on a 2nd tier BJ Ryan, Broxton, Lidge, Bell (or whenever they normally go, I don't have the numbers in front of me) and pick up strong MRs late in the draft.
Also, if this is your first 14 man draft reallly pay attention if you're on the ends at 1-2 or 13-14. It's a long time between picks.
