I'm in a 12 team keeper league, we keep 5 players (1 must be a pitcher). My current keepers are Manny, Reyes, Beltran, Howard and Oswalt. I pick 11th in the first round. I'm pretty sure from what others have said that Weiters will be available at what will amount to the 71st pick.
So you are keeping Beltran, I'm a Mets fan, but are afraid to pick Weiters. Think this:
How many quality catchers (KEEPER LEAGUE) will occur each year? This is the A-Rod minus the juices at a hard spot. Of is easy to pick. He has only posted a 350+ BA and gookoo stats. You would be mistaken if you didn't draft him...assuming you need a catcher.
He is being talked about like the top 3 - 5 catchers for a LONG time.
I wouldn't say I'm afraid of taking Weiters, I just wasn't really considering him until the last few days. You mention someone like Beltran, but he has an actual track record in the majors, but rookies...well, there are plenty that disappoint. Especially to begin with, even prospects that have been hyped lots. That's the real dilemma, because I finished tied for first last year and won it 3 years ago, I prefer to go with more proven players in the early rounds. Now the guy that posted before you said that it was way to early for Weiters and you pretty much imply it's a no-brainer. Couldn't be further apart!
I guess it boils down to the fact that he could be something really special, so if he's there it'll likely be real hard to pass on. Especially a catcher.
Mauer with power is something I read the other day...wouldn't that be sweet?
I have Weiters on my team so I may be biased but if he doesn't start the season with the O's I believe he will be up before too long. He will pt up great numbers in AAA and the team won't be able to keep him down there. I'd say he will be with the O's approximately 3/4 of the season. I think he's worth it.
According to the Median Draft Position Report (MDP)#2 posted on this website, his MDP is 139.
I usuall bump all keepers up a couple of rounds, and perhaps more for someone who is considered one of the top prospects this season.
I am in a 12 team 5X5 keeper league and I drafted him in the mid-8th round around pick 90. I was thinking I could have waited another round but I didn't want to let him go.
I think you can wait one more round, but some desperate owner might grab him before then.
As far as when he will be called up, I think by June. By delaying his callup it gives the O's one more season (based on the number of games of major league service) before he is eligible for salary arbitration.
The O's are in a tough division with Tampa, NY and Boston all tough opponents and even Toronto fielding a solid team, so its not as though they are playing to win this year.
I don't have a problem with it in a keeper. Manny, Beltran, and Oswalt are getting up there in age, so maybe you would trade them for younger players and free up a keeper spot for Wieters.
I'm contemplating this as well. I'm in a 14 team, 5 keeper league (no restrictions, can keep any 5 forever, currently have Howard, BJ, C Lee, Granderson, and Oswalt), so grabbing Weiters is high on my list...Hmmm...I should change my team name to Grabbing My Weiters after the draft if I get him.
I was thinking of taking him with my 3rd pick (my 8th player, or pick 8.3 (#101) since I picked 3rd in the 14 team league). That might be a tad early, but I feel that C is deep enough where I could get a decent fill-in C at the end of the draft to hold the boat and it'll bother me if he gets taken (stupid man crush).
On the flip side though, 5 keepers isn't a ton, and it's a disadvantage to be locking up "the next best thing" every year if they don't pan out.
I disagree about Weiters switching positions, for the same reason why Mike Piazza was not moved until late in his career. As a C he will be awesome, as a 1B, only average or slightly above average.
I do think they will DH him once in a while to give his knees a rest.
