This is close but I think Howard's power outweighs the loss in pitching in this deal. I would do it.

I agree it's probably close in a redraft but I think being a keeper makes it even better. I'd be all over it.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Check the decline on Ryan Howard (already 29 and with old man skills):

VORP
2006: 82.3
2007: 55.2
2008: 36.6

SLG:
2006: .659
2007: .584
2008: .543

AVG:
2006: .313
2007: .268
2008: .251

Career v. Lefties
.231/.314/.471

Yes, I've left out RBIs (149, 136, 146) and HRs (58, 47, 48). The point is simply that you couldn't trade for him, plug him in for years, and win the deal.

The pitcher isn't much of a loss even though I dislike Gallaraga and think the Jays' pitcher is a huge risk: Zambrano's going to break down, and on the surface, you do upgrade your hitter a lot.

I was about to say I wouldn't do it, but I'm convinced you could trade for him now, enjoy him for a year, and resell him next offseason (or if you fall out of the race unfortunately this year). You could sell him higher than this, I'd think.

Howard has shown regression in some areas, but I have to assume the OP is in a 5x5 league so its kind of hard to just dismiss 2 out of the 5 categories. Howard has been consistently exceptional in HR's, RBI's and has been steady in R's (104,94,105). I wouldn't be so quick to say that Howard is declining.

In a more complicated scoring league maybe but ina standard 5x5, I think Howard has huge value and upside.
