I was recently offered A-Rod & Javier Vazquez for Cole Hamels & Chone Figgins in a just drafted keeper league. (Keep 10.)
At first, it sounded worthwhile on paper but I'm not going to have a spot on the DL to accomodate A-Rod so I'll be playing short a roster spot through May, Chone Figgins is my 2B and I'd have to pick up another 2B to replace him, and I'm not thrilled with the dropoff from Hamels to Javier Vazquez. (I should be able to afford the hit in steals.) With that said, adding A-Rod to my team could be huge down the line for me so I'm torn.
Should I be taking this offer thinking I got away with murder or should I try to pry a better SP instead of Vazquez away from him (his rotation is strong & deep already and would be adding Hamels in the deal, he needs the steals badly, and I'd be taking on an injured player that he clearly wants to get rid of) and risk that ending negotiations?
My Roster:
C: Brian McCann 1B: Miguel Cabrera (1B/3B) 2B: Chone Figgins (2B/3B) SS: Rafael Furcal 3B: Garrett Atkins (1B/3B) OF: Carlos Beltran OF: Bobby Abreu OF: Johnny Damon UT: Carlos Delgado (1B) UT: Jim Thome (UT)
I like it. You will lose out on Hamels, but I'd rather replace pitching.
Figgins is unlikely to be a 2B next year.
Smoltz could go for a 2B to free up your DL slot for A-Rod. Alternatively, you could just trade Damon (The end is neigh!)/Atkins for a 2B to play Hawpe. That man shouldn't be benched. You wouldn't even have to wait for A-Rod's return to do this with Cabrera to cover 3B & Dukes to play UTIL to free a 1B for 1B.
Thanks for the help on mine. I think it is a very good deal for you and would take it as is. You may want to try and put together a deal with another owner that includes Smoltz or Escobar in return for a 2B. That would fill your roster need and open up a spot on your DL.
i'm a bit late to the show, but for what it's worth i think you made the right call. this will pay dividends both this year and next. also, thanks for your help with mine!
