Final keeper spots. WHIR

Postby tdmel30 » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:44 am

10 team, NL-only, 4x4, keeper. $260 auction cap with a $185 keeper cap. Keeper values based on previous years performance. 11 hitters, 9 pitchers, no bench.

I've got most of my keepers picked out, but was looking for opinions on my last 1 or 2. We can keep up to $185 worth of players and I've got $19 left. Here is my roster with players I will be keeping for sure:

C - McCann
1B - D. Lee
2B -
SS -
3B -
MI -
CI -
OF(4) - Kemp, Dunn
P(9) - Webb, Volquez, Capps, C. Perez

Here are my options for the last $19:

Theriot - $8 - Great avg, some SB's, zero power and RBI
Cantu - $11 - Good power and RBI option
Kuroda - $7 - Very good ERA and WHIP numbers, should get more W's this year
Volstad - $6 - Very good young arm.

Thanks in advance. Leave a link and I'll get back to you.

Kuroda and Cantu. That's a decent 3B option, and Kuroda's a good pitcher who just gained Glove Hudson at 2B.

I'd go with Volstad and Cantu. Like Volstad to put up some solid numbers this year and Cantu is going to put up the same numbers as he did last year.

Cantu & Kuroda. I see both outproducing their cost. Cantu putting up similar numbers to last season wouldn't be a stretch and I see Kuroda as a safer choice than Volstad. (You could keep Theriot as depth at that price if you wanted too but I think Kuroda would help you out more.)

Thanks everyone. Here is the tally so far.

Cantu 5
Volstad 3
Theriot 2
Kuroda 2

I think this is reflecting my thoughts pretty closely. I had Cantu as part of most combinations, but was really having a hard time with the others.

Volstad was very good last year and is still developing. His only negative I saw was a whip slightly above where I'd like to see it. We'll have to see if that's something he carries with him or something he improves upon.

Kuroda had a great year and I believe is under appreciated. His only knock was Wins and that is really out of his hands. That should improve this year as well as other numbers with an improved defense and more offensive support.

Theriot had a great year average wise and was ok in SB's. The downside is that he is an absolute drain in HR and RBI.

All of these guys will go for more than their keeper value come auction time. I guess, in my opinion, I'm leaning toward weather I want to take the "safer" option this year in Kuroda. Or take the better long term option in Volstad. I generally won't sacrifice this season to play for next, but I don't know if the difference between Kuroda and Volstad is very much.
