Keeper - Hanley Ramirez or Albert Pujols

Postby tdougherty » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:34 pm

I have a draft on Saturday and I need to decide on my keeper. It’s either going to be Hanley Ramirez or Albert Pujols (NL Only Draft). If I keep Ramirez, I’ll lose my first round draft pick and if I keep Pujols, I’ll lose my second round pick.

It’s a 12-team league and I have the seventh pick in the first round and the sixth pick (18th overall) in the second round.

I’m leaning heavily towards keeping Pujols (because Hanley and him are similar statistically and I’ll get a better 2nd player having a 1st round pick).

Any thoughts?

I'd go with Pujols over Hanley because you only have to give up the 2nd round pick instead of a 1st rounder. Otherwise, you would need to take Hanley first.

Keep Pujols

HRam and Pujols are so close that the decision is basically made for you by the draft pick issue.
Having Pujols + 1st rounder is MUCH better than HRam + 2nd rounder.

Maybe some folks missed the "NL ONLY" part.

Let's take a look at some possible combinations:
Hanley Ramirez + A Gonzalez / Joey Votto / Derek Lee / Garrett Atkins / Carlos Delgado / Conor Jackson / James Loney / Jorge Cantu / Pablo Sandoval

or

Albert Pujols + Rafael Furcal / Stephen Drew / Troy Tulowitzki / JJ Hardy / Ryan Theriot

It really depends on who else is being kept, I guess - but leaving Ramirez out there for someone else to grab makes no sense when there are a ton of quality 1B still available. It's quite possible that A-Gon will be around in R2. Give me Han-Ram + A Gon over Pujols + Furcal in the 2nd any day of the week.

I would agree with you if this was 2B or even 3B, but all of the good shortstops are in the NL anyway...so this arguement may actually work against you...
