Looking long range

Postby ThatDude » Tue Mar 10, 2009 2:58 pm

I'm in a keeper league with no limits or restrictions on keepers. No time limits on how long we can keep them, and we don't have to give the pick in the round we originally drafted them.

I'm looking to spend a few picks this year on some young high-upside guys that I think will be available in the draft, with the aim of keeping them for pretty much ever, making them the cornerstones of my team.

How would you rank the following guys with only that goal in mind?

(listed in no particular order)
Mark Wieters
David Price
Jay Bruce
Chris Davis
Stephen Drew
Kevin Slowey
Justin Upton
Clayton Kershaw
Joey Votto
Ryan Zimmerman
Lastings Milledge

And if there's anyone you think I've neglected, feel free to include them.

Really? Just wondering why you have Bruce so low, while everyone else has him significantly higher.

I'm basing this off of a few things - position scarcity for one, overall talent and probability that potential is reached, etc. IMO, Weiters is as "can't miss" as they come, and as a C, gets the top nod. However, I normally like to steer towards players with experience

Bruce is getting no love?
Davis is getting too much?

Again, you need to look at position scarcity down the road...Davis at 1B/3B moves him up a bit over Bruce. It's not there is no love for Bruce, but...

Bruce will be 20/20 with a .290 average. Davis will be 30/10 with a .285 average. All else equal, i think there's plenty of 20/20 OF's...same with Votto. 25-30 HRs with a .300 average.

Price may have been a little high in my ranking, but I think he's got the stuff to be an ace for a lot of years.

I probably should have mentioned this before.....but on the topic of position scarcity, this league doesn't use 3 OF's. We use LF/CF/RF, so scarcity very much comes into play in there just like everywhere else.
