My five keepers are the following: 1B Albert Pujols UT Ryan Howard OF Carl Crawford OF Nick Markakis SP Cole Hamels
I need to fill the following positions: C, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP, RP
The following players are on the board, and I will have the 4th pick (3 of the players will be off the board when i pick):
Justin Morneau, Brandon Phillips, Francisco Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Joe Mauer, Joe Nathan, Alexei Ramirez, Alex Rios, Curtis Granderson, Cliff Lee, Francisco Liriano, Nate Mclouth, Jacoby Ellsbury, Roy Oswalt, Shane Victorino, Victor Martinez
Who do you think I should be pulling for? Remember that I have both my 1B and Util positions full, so even if either Morneau or Papi are there at the 4th pick, I would be forced to place them on my bench. I think Phillips would be the best case scenario, but I'm quite confident he'll be off the board when it's my pick.
What do you think? Any help will be recipricated if needed.
I should add that we have a keeper system in place that adds points to a player every year he is kept, and maximum of 7 keeper points per team. Every player drafted will have 0 points going into next season, and therefore bares consideration.
1) Phillips 2) Morneau (too good to pass up...if you get him you can trade away Howard's terrible avg.) 3) Rios 4) Alexei Ramirez 4B) Mauer (I prefer Alezei, but I couldn't argue with you if you took Mauer instead)
There's no way that I would consider taking a closer with your first pick. There are too many legit bats left for you to take Nathan. You will have plenty of chances to get saves later in the draft...the cost is just too high in round 1.
Phillips is the best match for your team but I doubt he is there. Morneau seems too good to pass up but then his value depends on what you can trade him for. It is too early for a C or closers IMO so you are probably going to have to finish up your OF.
Hmmm... I might take Brandon Phillips because I don't believe in taking a SP or RP with that high of a pick... that's just my philosophy.
However, I think Victor Martinez will have a bounce-back year. If you believe so, the question with V-Mart would be if you actually want to reach for him THAT high or take a chance that he will fall a round or two and take him there. If you don't like V-Mart's bounce back chances as much as I do, then this is a moot point.

looking at your needs... i'd say:
Alexi, Phillips, McLouth Rios
However... it would be very hard for me to pass up on Morneau if he's still available... as stated earlier, if he falls to you, try to trade howard for a good haul.
Here's to you, Mr. Robinson. Jesus loves you more than you Cano.
I think V-Mart will be very good this season. But you don't want to take a chance with your first pick. So with Mauer being hurt I would go with Phillips, Alexei,Morneau,McClouth.
I would rank them generally as follows: 1. Brandon Philips 2. Alexei Ramirez 3. Juston Morneau 4. David Ortiz 5. Joe Mauer 6. Alex Rios 7. Shane Victorino 8. Curtis Granderson 9. Nate McClouth 10. Jacoby Ellsbury 11. Victor Martinez 12. K-Rod 13. Joe Nathan 14. Francisco Liriano 15. Cliff Lee 16. Roy Oswalt
For you specifically, I think I would drop Morneau and Ortiz all the way down below Victor Martinez. Yes, you'd be going with someone who isn't the BPA, but as has been mentioned, you can't just assume that you will be able to trade that player for equal or better value.
Trades are often difficult. Many managers are reluctant to trade players on their team who they by default get attached to, meaning that many trades don't happen unless one party is overpaying at some significance.
