Am I overpaying for Josey Reyes and Pablo Sandoval?

Postby GrandAdmiralDan » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:58 am

I have proposed a trade that I am now getting cold feet over. I can't decide if I should be hoping the offer is accepted, or if I should cancel my proposal.

I am offering Tulowitzki, Maglio Ordonez, Howie Kendrick, Carlos Guillen, and Paul Maholm in exchange for Jose Reyes and Pablo Sandoval.
He's going to have to drop 3 players off of his team to accept, but he has a number of garbage players to choose from to drop

Carlos Gonzalez, Jerry Hairston, Braden Looper, Jeff Smardzija, Andy Pettite, Kosuke Fukudome, Skip Schumaker.

I'm in a head to head Yahoo league with 16 teams.
Our batting categories are: R, H, HR, RBI, SB, BB, AVG, SLG
Our pitching categories are: IP, W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

The offensive positions are C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, OF, Util, Util
I have those filled and all 7 bench spots filled with offensive players as well.
The strategy I am using makes me desire to have a 2nd catcher.
The pitching positions are SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P
I have 6 of those positions filled with SPs

I am punting on L, SV, ERA, WHIP and will try to use heavy streaming to consistently take the IP, W, and K cats. I specifically focused on offensive players (first 18 of my 25 draft picks were batters)

My current roster:
C, 3B Russel Martin LAD
1B Albert Pujols STL
2B Brandon Philips CIN
3B, 1B Carlos Guillen DET - soon to have LF eligibilty
SS Troy Tulowitzki COL
LF, RF Andre Either LAD
CF Vernon Wells TOR
RF Magglio Ordonez DET
OF, RF Brad Hawpe COL
Util CF, RF Denard Span MIN
Util 2B Howie Kendrick LAA
BN RF Jeremy Hermida FLA
BN 1B Paul Konerko CWS
BN SS Orlando Cabrera OAK
BN 1B, 3B Hank Blalock TEX
BN 2B Alexi Casilla MIN
BN LF,RF Jack Cust OAK
BN C Jason Varitek BOS

This trade would have me lose Tulo, Ordonez, Kendrick, and Guillen from my everyday lineup, but in their place I would have Reyes, and then use a combination of Blalock and Sandoval at third, likely make Hermida an everyday starter, and then whoever else on my bench is hottest or provides me with a boost in a particular category. I imagine that person is usually going to be Cabrera or Konerko.

Sandoval would be a huge upgrade at backup catcher. I would drop Varitek, which would mean this trade creates 4 more roster spots for me to play with. I would keep 2 or 3 of them as flex spots for use in streaming of hitters and pitchers.

TIA for any advice. WHIR

Getting Reyes is a big plus. Sandavol is a bit risky, but probably worth it. I still think you make this trade. Of course, if I am the other guy, I wouldn't make this trade. The other guy will probably want better players in return. Adding Kendrick, Guillen and Maholm wouldn't motivate me to give up Reyes.

I would make this trade if I were getting back Reyes.

To me its Tulo and Mags for Reyes. Even in a deep league the other guys seem to just be throw ins and not worth worrying about losing.

I would leave this trade out there and hope it gets accepted.

Anytime you can get a top 5 player without dealing a player in the top 50, I say do it. Quickly, before the other guy gets "cold feet"

Do me a favor and help me with my issue:

i wouldn't have cold feet over this... like previously posted anytime you can get a top 5 player without dealing even a top 25 player your doing somethin... i also don't think it will be accepted tho, even if he has some 'garbage' he can cut loose, that doesn't mean he will do it at the expense of his best player... if it does go through pat yourself on the back...

I'd be fine offering this trade, but no way would I accept it (if I were the other guy).

Thanks for all of the responses everyone. Very helpful.
I really needed to hear some opinions other than my own on this one.

The trade proposal did end up getting accepted by the other manager. I almost canceled the trade after getting nervous, but the responses you guys offered gave me the nerve to leave it out there and in the end be happy it was accepted.

BTW I am glad I finally jumped in and signed up for a user name here.
I was a frequent reader of these boards last baseball season and figured I would join at some point to seek help from others and return the favor.

Speaking of which, I shall now go check out the thread SteveJeltzPhanClub linked to and see if I can offer any help there.

Thanks again.
