Trade one of my speed guys for POWER?

Postby ob187 » Tue Mar 10, 2009 5:38 am

I'm in a 10 team 5x5 CBS roto league. What do you think I need to improve on? Feel like my biggest weaknesses are HR and Saves.

Here's my lineup:

Batting CATS: ba, hr, r, rbi, sb

c - Russell Martin, Jorge Posada
1b - Derrek Lee
2b - Chase Utley
3b - Aramis Ramirez
ss - Michael Young
0f - Bobby Abreu, Ryan Braun, Jack Cust, Magglio Ordonez, Grady Sizemore
ut - Chone Figgins, Robinson Cano

Pitching CATS: era, w, k, sv, whip

sp - Scott Baker, Mark Buehrle, Joba Chamberlain, Mike Pelfrey, Johan Santana, Adam Wainwright
rp - Huston Street, Brian Wilson, Chris Perez

Bench:

bn - Fausto Carmona, Shin-Soo Choo, Pablo Sandoval
dl - John Smotlz

If you could find someone in need of a 2B and willing to trade for Figgins or Cano I would do that. But that might be difficult because in my experience it is easier to trade power for speed than it is to trade speed for power.

i actually dont think your power is all that terrible...you dont have a true masher in your lineup, but you have a bunch of guys that should hit 20-30 HRs, and the rest of them (outside of Chone) will give you 10-15

the only thing i could suggest is trying to trade dlee and cano/chone for a big bat if that owner doesnt have a good 2B

you def need help in saves, as I think street loses his job for one reason or another this season, so id look to move him for maybe a matt capps if that owner believes in street

I agree, your best bet is maybe offer a Figgins/Chamberlain offer. I think Chamberlain on the Yankees staff is a #5 starter and won't get that many starts, but he does bring some trade prospects if you do it befor the season starts

In a 10 team league, you'll probably have a hard time moving a 2nd/3rd tier secondbaseman in Cano for power. I also doubt that right now Figgins will bring you any power, maybe if he starts out real hot. Look to move either Cano/Figgins for Corpas to protect yourself behind Street.

Power-wise, I think you'll be fine. 5 guys jump out as 30 HR quality (Braun, Sizemore, Utley, Cust, A-Ram) and you have a couple that can hit 20 (D. Lee, Ordonez, maybe Abreu). Of course in a 10-teamer, you might do a bit better than that.

I'd probably try to trade Cano. Figgins can put you over the top or close to 100 SB with the team you have and so, he probably has more value to you if he stays healthy. For a power hitter, I'd try to target Carlos Pena for Cano and for saves, I'd try to make a run at Soria, Broxton, Fuentes, Valverde, or a Marmol type.

Should I trade Figgins/Chamberlain or Cano/Chamberlain for a closer?

I would go Cano/Chamberlain, that way you won't lose any speed

Am I the only who thinks SP is the weakest link on this team, particularly being a ten team league. Chamberlain provides you with the most potential outside of Santana so if you deal him you are in a world of hurt and thats assuming Chamberlain is a 30 start pitcher. I would not feel comfortable with Wainwright being my #2. Sure you can pick up SP during the year, but you stand a better chance of picking up quality closers than SP throughout the year, IMO.
