Keep Santana?

Postby cwhitty » Mon Mar 09, 2009 4:12 pm

Was going to keep Ervin Santana. With elbow injury should I still?
10 team/10 keepers JAmes Shields, David Price, Adam Wainright are my other pitcher keepers.

Other options are Max Scherzer, Brandon Morrow, Ted Lilly, Joe Nathan.
I'm considering either Scherzer or Joe Nathan.

What do you think?

im no expert, but ill try and give an answer

im assuming you just keep the player, no round or dollar values attached since none were listed
i would keep big game james, but thats me...hes a solid #2 SP and helps across the board
wainwright is my next choice...i like nathan, but wouldnt keep a closer unless i had too (plus he has had some shoulder soreness this spring)
price and mad max are still a half season to year away, and i think you could redraft them if you really really want

help

Thanks for your thoughts. Shields, Wainwright and Price are my certain keepers. I am trying to choose between Mad Max, Nathan and the rest of the crew. I am leaning towards Nathan even though I don't like to keep closers. I'm a little concerned about starting the season with Max & Price, neither of which will exceed 150 innings. Plus Max seems to have some injury issues in his young career. Whatcha think?

I would go with Nathan from that crew. Yes, he's just a closer, but he's definitely one of the top 2 closers, and maybe the top 1.

Help with mine:

I think I agree. What is the expectation regarding Ervin Santana? Elbow soreness scares me a little. I don't really think Johan ever had anything just a creative way to get him out of the WBC. My keepers are due on Sunday so I have the rest of the week to hear more.

Of that group, Nathan. He'll get you 35 saves, his ratios are insane (even at 75-80 innings, they're so low, they really help).

Ervin is a borderline keeper, and I'm worried that he may end up being out for most of April.

Keep an eye on Santana's health. If his knee is looking better, then I would keep him along with Price, Nathan, and Shields. Scherzer has a ton of talent, but his violent delivery bothers me long term, and could point to a move back to the pen at some time. This year, though, I'd put him above Shields because of K/9 and ERA potential.
