Bottom of the barrel pitchers, WHIR as always

Postby etex211 » Sun Mar 08, 2009 11:06 pm

I've kind of backed myself into a corner in one of my drafts. With 10 rounds of the draft complete, the pitching has been pretty well picked over. For the most part, I have ignored pitching early in the draft. I have 8 roster spots to fill in the next 13 rounds of the draft: SS, MI, DH, and 5 pitchers.

Here is the pitchers that I currently have:

Verlander (drafted in round 6)
Greinke (keeper, forfeited my 10th round pick)
Brian Wilson (keeper, forfeited my 22nd round pick)
BJ Ryan (keeper, forfeited my 11th round pick)

Wilson and Ryan have me set for closers. I need to focus on starters with my remaining picks. My remaining 8 picks will be in rounds 12, 14-19, and 21.

Here is a list of pitchers (starters and guys that might start) that are still available. I am just listing the top guys that I see in the league's default rankings, and a few names from lower down the list that catch my eye:

Brad Penny
Hiroki Kuroda
Jeremy Bonderman
Sean Marshall
Ian Snell
Jeff Samardzija
Brandon McCarthy
Justin Masterson
Barry Zito
Dave Bush
John Lannan
Randy Wolf
Jesse LItsch
Wandy Rodriguez
Glen Perkins
Scott Olsen
Phil Hughes
Todd Wellemeyer
Anthony Reyes
Jonathan O. Sanchez
Tim Wakefield
Greg Smith
Doug Davis
Kevin Millwood
Dana Eveland
Braden Looper
Micah Owings
Dontrelle Willis
Clay Buchholz
Andrew Miller
Anibal Sanchez
Ryan Rowland-Smith
Matt Harrison
Brian Bannister
Kyle Davies

I know this is a long list. All I am looking for is impressions of guys that strike you as especially better or worse than the other guys on the list.

I generally like starters on good teams, and I am not afraid to gamble on pitchers in contract years or on young pitchers with good stuff.

Let me know what jumps out at you from the list. Thanks for the help. I am happy to help in return, please leave a link.

I like bonderman, penny, kuroda, wakefield and few others that may just pick up when they have favorable matchups

Kuroda is under the radar. With the Furcal/ODawg combo, Kuorda's gbs will be helped out by some spectacular defense.

I'm hearing great things about Jonathan Sanchez.

Watch the rotation situations with Hughes and Buccholz. Chamberlain has been pitching like crap and Hughes has made some great adjustments and been very impressive so far.

If Wandy Rodriguez is healthy, he may be a huge sleeper.

Watch Sean Marshall. Not sure if he'll get the #5 spot in the rotation.

Glenn Perkins could be a nice sleeper.

Rowland-Smith- Former relievers in their first full year starting are usually successful so watch out for him too.

Bonderman is a nice sleeper, we'll have to wait and see if he's feeing as good as he would have people believe. I think Rowand-Smith makes the rotation, and I like him a lot. Wandy will hopefully work out his home/away split stats and show more consistency this season. He has the potential to be one of the best strike out pitchers in the MLB and is always a great sleeper. Forget LItsch, he got lucky with all those ground balls last season, he can't strike out anyone with his cream puff pitches. Keep an eye on the Jays Ricky Romero though. He has been super hot this spring and with Marcum and McGowan out for the season the Jays have no choice but to use him. He's still a little green but he has great stuff. The Jays drafted him ahead of guys like Ryan Braun and Tulo, so that should give you some indication of his ceiling.

Wellemeyer should be solid and Miller is a decent long shot sleeper as well.

Ricky Romero was a stud around the time he was drafted in 05. If its true, then def. keep an eye on him.

Brad Penny - If you can get him cheap late, he'd be a good bargain pick.
Hiroki Kuroda - I'm a Kuroda fan if you can get him cheap enough.
Jeremy Bonderman - Pass.
Sean Marshall - Intriguing, although I would rather have a couple of the other young pitchers on this list. Looks like he'll lock down the #5 spot though.
Ian Snell - Pass.
Jeff Samardzija - No. He's not going to beat out Marshall for the #5 spot, and his control isn't nearly good enough to be a starter.
Brandon McCarthy - No. As a Rangers fan, I wouldn't even take him. Far too injury prone.
Justin Masterson - I have no idea what Boston's going to do with him. I think he's got a chance to be the #5 if Penny gets hurt, but he has to beat out Buchholz/Bowden. I'd say no for now.
Barry Zito - Pass.
Dave Bush - Possibly.
John Lannan - Pass.
Randy Wolf - Pass.
Jesse LItsch - Pass.
Wandy Rodriguez - Yes.
Glen Perkins - Yes.
Scott Olsen - No, no, no. FB velocity down, control down, pitching in the AL now...no.
Phil Hughes - Yes.
Todd Wellemeyer - Yes.
Anthony Reyes - No. He's always an injury risk due to his godawful mechanics.
Jonathan O. Sanchez - Absolutely. This is the guy I'd target out of everyone here. If he manages to somehow reduce his bb/9, he'll be very good value. I think he's got a chance to be this year's Volquez.
Tim Wakefield - No.
Greg Smith - No, no, no. 4.82 FIP with a .252 BABIP as a finesse pitcher are huge signs that point to regression (and big regression at that). He's also going to Coors.
Doug Davis - Pass.
Kevin Millwood - I'd think about Millwood. He generally pitches well in contract years, and if nothing else he may give you wins. His $12mm option vests if he pitches 180 innings this year, and given this economy, you'd better believe he'll be trying his hardest to make that happen.
Dana Eveland - Pass.
Braden Looper - Pass.
Micah Owings - Pass.
Dontrelle Willis - No.
Clay Buchholz - Yes. I still believe in Clay, and he's either first or second (probably second) in line for the rotation in the event that someone goes down.
Andrew Miller - Yes. Good sleeper pick this year.
Anibal Sanchez - Yes.
Ryan Rowland-Smith - Yes.
Matt Harrison - No. Harrison's ceiling is a #4 guy and the combination of him being a flyball pitcher and his inability to miss bats doesn't play well in Arlington.
Brian Bannister - No.
Kyle Davies - Pass.
